Modeling, Assembly and Rendering of an American Chopper

Title: American Chopper Modelling and Photo Realistic Rendering Using Solidworks.

Objective: Designing, modeling, and rendering of the American Chopper parts using various methods and assembling in Solidworks with appropriate appearance.

Introduction: An American chopper is a custom made bike famous in the 1700-1800s and still has a cult following among bike lovers. It features amazing structures, modified parts, long fork and lengthened appearance.

The chopper modeled with the following techniques-

  1. Creating sketch and modeling the various parts in Solidworks.
  2. Applying different features and appearance to model the parts.
  3. Creating assembly of the chopper with all the parts.
  4. Creating Photorealistic rendering of the chopper using PhotoView360 or Solidworks Visualize.

Parts to be Modelled-

  1. Transmission Belt
  2. Kickstand
  3. Front and Rear Fender
  4. Chainlink
  5. Oil Tank
  6. Pedal
  7. Front and Rear Wheel
  8. Front Fork
  9. Chassis
  10. Engine
  11. Gas Tank

*Descriptions and Design Methodologies:

Part Designing and Modelling- Part designing is a process of creating precise geometry in a 2D sketch and modeling it to make a virtual product by applying various features.

1. Transmission Belt:

Transmission belt transmits power between two components by means of chain link.

2. Kickstand:

A Kickstand made out of metal attached to the chopper to support the vehicle when it is stationary. It lies horizontally when not in use.

3. Front and Rear Fender:

Fender is an automobile body used to frame the front and rear wheel.

4. Chainlink:

Chain-link connected to the engine and rear-wheel used to drive the chopper from one place to another with mechanical power. Chain-link is made of pins and plates connected to each other.

5. Oil-tank:

A Oil tank is a storage container for the oil and released to the engine.

6. Pedal:

A Pedal is a tool connected to the lower part of the chopper used to provide stability to the rider.

7. Front and Rear Wheel:

A wheel is a circular body that revolves around an axle and enables the chopper to move on the ground.

8. Front Fork:

The front fork is a suspension component of the chopper, it consists of the headlight, handle, clutch and brake. It is used to steer the vehicle.

9. Chassis:

Chassis is a basic metal framework in an automobile in which other components of the vehicle attached.

10. Engine:

An engine is the most important part of an automobile. It converts energy to mechanical energy by burning fuels to drive the vehicle.

11. Gas tank:

A gas tank is a container used to hold the chopper’s fuel in liquid or vapor form.

Final Assembly of Chopper: Assembly consists of many components and parts. Now we create assembly of individual parts we created and fit it together by using tools like mates, move and rotate components. First we open all the parts in solidworks and insert one by one in assembly window from side pane. First we insert chassis, engine, pedal, kickstand, transmission belt, rear wheel, rear fender, chainlink, gas tank, front fork, front wheel, and front fender.

Conclusion: Each part of the American chopper modeled in Solidworks with given constraints and dimensions using Solidworks tools then the individual parts assembled in the Solidworks assembly window using mates and advanced mates and final rendering completed in Solidworks built-in photo view 360 and Solidworks Visualize.
