Design Methodology
Part Modeling
- Chain
Chain is some of the most important parts of a motorcycle drivetrain and their maintenance is a crucial part of safe riding. They are used for a very critical task of delivering power from the gearbox to the rear wheel.

Transmission
The function of transmission is transferring engine power to the driveshaft and rear wheels.
There are three types of drivetrains in the two-wheeler….
- Chain Drive
- Belt Drive
- Shaft Drive
- Chain Drive
In India, more than 90% of the motorcycles running on road transmit the power to the rear wheels via a ‘Chain Drive’. This drivetrain requires two sprockets, one on the output shaft of the transmission and the other on the wheel, just like a cycle. The sprocket size differs, depending upon the engine’s power and torque output.
Why use Chain Drive?
- Firstly, a chain drive is cheaper to research and manufacture.
- These are highly efficient in power transmission.
- Chain Drives can operate in any conditions, be it wet or super dry.
- Can withstand high power and high speeds.
- Fairly convenient to repair and install.
- Chain drive experiences less slip.
Chain Drive Disadvantages
- One of the annoying disadvantages is that a chain drive requires frequent lubrication.
- As this drivetrain is a bit heavy, the rider can experience speed fluctuations.
- The driving and driven sprocket must be perfectly aligned to reduce power loses.
- They have a lower service life.
- Belt Drive
- The principle remains the same as the chain drive, instead, this uses two pulleys.
- One on the output shaft of the engine and the other on the wheel.
- A belt connects both the pulleys and it snugly fits on the grooves of the pulleys.
- The belt is made up of reinforced rubber with a strong synthetic material making the belt durable
Belt Drive is Useful
- Require less maintenance.
- Are less noisy and have fewer vibrations.
- They weight way less than a chain drive.
- These last longer as high as 1,00,000Kms.
- They have fewer transmission losses.
Disadvantages of Belt Drive
- This drivetrain eats up more space.
- They can only function up to a certain speed.
- When compared to a chain drive, they tend to slip more.
- Shaft Drive
- The engine runs the main shaft inside the transmission and the output shaft is connected with a propeller shaft.
- The propeller shaft runs the rear wheel by transferring the rotation via a 90-degree differential. For you to know, Bevel gears are used in a motorcycle differential.
Advantages of Shaft Drive
- Very high transmission efficiency
- Longer service life when compared to both, a chain, as well as a belt, driven motorcycle.
- These can transfer large power and torque without reducing efficiency.
- This drive train has almost negligible noise.
Disadvantages of Shaft Drive
- A shaft drive has high initial research and manufacturing cost.
- When compared to belt and chain drives, these are less economical.
- This is the heaviest type of drivetrain.
- Can fair really difficult and expensive to repair.
Wheel
A circular frame or disk arranged to revolve on an axis, as on or in vehicles or machinery.

Fender
Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

- Chassis
All the components of a motorcycle, like the suspension, wheels, fuel tank, seats, handlebars are attached to this base structure which lends a motorcycle its strength and ability to handle well.
Types of Chassis
- Backbone Chassis
The backbone frame is shaped like a spine and holds important bike parts in place, and the engine is attached to the frame. The amount of product used to make this is lesser than other frame types, making it very cost-effective.
- Single Cradle Chassis.
A single cradle frame or single downtube frame resembles the framework of a bicycle. It has a unique steel tube that goes down to support the engine for a single cradle chassis. It also has a simple and cost-effective structure.
- Double Cradle Frame.
A Double Cradle or a double downtube chassis frame has got two tubes going down that cradle it. A Double Cradle chassis is better than its single downtube counterparts in terms of strength and rigidity, though there is no evident difference in cost. While this type of frame is the most common choice in India due to its sturdiness and cost-effectiveness.
- Perimeter Chassis.
The perimeter frame, also known as the Twin Spar frame, is one of the most popular choices among performance sports bikes due to its suitability for high-performance motorcycle applications. This type of motorcycle chassis reduces rigidity as its steering head joins the swing-arm in the shortest distance possible.

- Fuel Tank
A fuel tank (also called a petrol tank or gas tank) is a safe Container for flammable fluids. Though any Storage tank for fuel may be so called, the term is typically applied to part of an engine system in which the Fuel is stored and propelled or released (pressurized gas) into an engine.
A fuel tank must allow or provide the following:
- Storage of fuel: the system must contain a given quantity of fuel and must avoid leakage and limit evaporative emissions.
- Filling: the fuel tank must be filled in a secure way, without sparks.
- Provide a method for determining level of fuel in tank, Gauging (the remaining quantity of fuel in the tank must be measured or evaluated).
- Venting (if over-pressure is not allowed, the fuel vapors must be managed through valves).
- Feeding of the Engine (through a pump).
- Anticipate potentials for damage and provide safe survival potential.
