Report for the American Chopper:
DESIGN AND ASSEMBLY OF AMERICAN CHOPPER AND PHOTOREALISTIC RENDERING
ABSTRACT
This Report involves Design and Assembly and Rendering of American Chopper Model, a motorbike with classical American roots which is custom made and innovative with spider-web designed rim wheels and Chromium paint jobs and themed fenders with its long front fork. American Chopper is Designed and assembled in Solid works and rendered using Solid works Visualize and Photo view 360 to give a realistic look.
INTRODUCTION
A Chopper is a type of custom motorcycle which emerged in California in the late 1950s. The Chopper is perhaps the most extreme of all custom styles, often using radically modified steering angles and lengthened forks for a stretched out appearance.
Why called Chopper?
Helicopter rotor chops or cuts the air to produce required the lift and hence the name chopper is used for a helicopter. Incidentally, “Chopper” is used for a semiconductor device called “thyristor” because of its ability to chop the sinusoidal wave at a desired location.
MODELING
The Chopper is built through feature based solid modeling and Surface Modeling features and consists of following components:
- Transmission Belt
- Kickstand
- Front Fender
- Rear Fender
- Oil Tank
- Pedal
- Chain
- Front Wheel
- Rear Wheel
- Chassis Front Fork
- Engine
- Gas Tank
- TRANSMISSION BELT
A Belt is a loop of flexible material used to link two or more rotating shafts mechanically, most often parallel. Belts may be used as a source of motion, to transmit power efficiently or to track relative movement.
Features Involved:
- Offset
- Extrude
- Fillet
Sketched in a plane with line and arc comments. Horizontal, Vertical and tangent relations to follow to complete with a fully defined sketch. The smart dimensions are also used for the numerically defined one. Next the Boss extrude is used to make a solid model and finished with filleting the sharp edges. Matte Rubber is used as Material Reference.
- KICKSTAND
A Kickstand is a device of a motorcycle that allows the chopper to be kept upright without leaning against another object. A kickstand is usually a piece of metal that flips down from the frame and makes contact with the ground.
Features Involved:
- Loft
- Dome
- Split
- Extrude Boss/Cut
- Fillet
Sketch Ellipse at a plane and spline at perpendicular plane to ellipse and make bottom handle horizontal. Pierce an another ellipse to the other end of the spline with the dimensions. Apply loft boss base and adjusted green dots to snap at vertex and guide to follow the centerline spline. Apply domes to the faces of ellipse. Cutting a rectangle edge at the midplane of the larger end. Split the bottom face to make the part float face. Change appearance to Chrome plate.
- FRONT FENDER
The Front Fenders primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, Rocks, liquids and other spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
Features Involved:
- Offset Entities
- Trim Entities
- Revolve
- Split
Sketch a Three point Arc and apply relations. Offset the entity and enclose the edges with the extend entities and power trim. Revolve using direction 1 and 2 with an axis of revolution. At the front edge sketch the spine and make vertical handle and apply split to remove some parts and same at the other end. Apply fillet for the finishing.
- REAR FENDER
The Rear Fenders are used to frame the rear wheel well.
Features Involved:
- Offset Entities
- Trim Entities
- Revolve Boss
- Split
Sketch a Three point arc as per geometry. Revolved in both directions. Split and fillet for the ends for a fender shape. Shell is applied in the inner face; the appearance is given as the Siena color.
- OIL TANK
Oil Tank is a Hollow Solid Model
Features Involved:
- Boss Extrude
- Combine
- Fillet
- Shell
2D Sketch is drawn and extruded on both directions and an another sketch is created and extruded on both directions and Combine feature is used to common the both extrudes. Fillets are applied for the edges and shell for the thickness and ensure it by using cut section. Apply appearance as Siena and white for the edges of the oil tank.
- PEDAL
The pedal is a part of the chopper that the Rider can step on to rest the foot while riding.
Features Invoved:
- Extrude Boss
- Linear pattern
- Fillet/Chamfer
Sketch a 2D and extrude and new sketch to revolve boss feature. Dome is applied for the revolve part and chamfer for the other ends. Fillets are applied necessary. New sketch is offset from the surface and fillet is applied. Linear pattern is applied four instances.
- CHAIN
Chain and sprockets are some of the most important parts of a motorcycle drivetrain and their maintenance is a crucial part of safe riding. They are used for a very critical task of delivering power from the engine to the rear wheel.
Features Involved:
- Sketch Blocks
- Extrude
- Curve Driven Pattern
- Mirror
A runaway sketch is created at the midplane and is used to save as a separate blocks a chain 1 and 2. The Blocks are inserted on to the 2D sketch and made relations to coincident with the curve. Then blocks are extruded and fillets are applied. Curve driven pattern is applied. Later the plates and pins are separated in a folder and mirrored using mirror entity.
- FRONT WHEEL
The Chopper has a front wheel which is farther forward than the handlebars. The wheels are to be inline with the front fork for a movement of the vehicle.
Features Involved:
- Revolve Boss/Cut
- Circular Pattern
- Extrude Boss/Cut
- Chamfer
This front wheel is designed with the start of 2D sketch in a plane and revolved. The Spider web shaped rim wheel is designed with the help of Circular pattern and the extrude cut. The Rotor is also designed in the same way of extrude cuts and linear, circular patterns. The caliper is then Chamfered asymmetric. The appearance is applied necessarily.
- REAR WHEEL
Rear wheel is bigger than the front because of the drive from engine and to withstand the load. Rear wheel drive is a form of engine and transmission layout used in chopper, where the engine drives the rear wheel only.
Features Invoved:
- Revolve Boss/Cut
- Extrude Boss/Cut
- Circular Pattern
- Chamfer
- Combine
- Fillet
The Rear wheel is of 5 parts namely Rim, Rotor, Caliper, Sprocket, and Tyre. Rim is done using revolve and circular pattern is used for the spider web shaped rim wheel. A caliper is designed and Chamfer feature is used at the end. Sprocket is sketched over the rim for Chain assembly and the grips are cut extruded from the Tyre.
- FRONT FORK
The chopper’s front fork is the portion of a chopper that holds the front wheel and allows one to steer. For handling, the front fork is the most critical part of a chopper.
Features Involved:
- Revolve Extrude/Cut
- Boss Extrude/Cut
- Linear Pattern
- Dome
- Sweep
- Combine
- Mirror
- Projected Curve
This model is mirrored with the half of the model is sketched. Front Axle frame is designed by revolves and cut solid bodies. The handle bar is designed with the projected curve feature and sweep is applied based on the circle. Headlight is done with revolve , dome and Chamfer. The model is mirrored and appearance is given. Luminous intensity is applied to the head light model for effective display.
- CHASSIS
The Chopper’s chassis forms the skeleton of the chopper. All the components of a chopper, like the wheels, fuel tank, fork, are attached to this base structure which lends a chopper its strength and ability to handle well.
Features Involved :
- Offset Entities
- Convert entities
- Projected Curve
- Trim
- Sweep
- Split
- Combine
- Extrude Boss/Cut
- Revolve
The Chassis consists of four parts namely Top frame, Axle Hosing, Base Frame and End Frame Shaft. The base frame is finished and projected curve is used for the Top Frame. The revolve feature is used for the Axle hosing and Sweep command for the end frame and extrude boss for the end frame shaft.
- ENGINE
A machine with moving parts that converts power into motion. Engine is a machine designed to convert one form of energy into mechanical energy. Like the internal combustion engine, burn a fuel to create heat which is then used to do work.
Features Involved:
- Extrude Boss/Cut
- Thin Extrude
- Projected Curve
- Linear Pattern
- Circular Pattern
- Sweep
- Dome
- Mirror
- Revolve
The Chopper Engine is designed with a series of projected curve and this model is of Cooling Fins, Exhaust pipe, Gear box, Sprocket, Engine case and Spark Plug.
- GAS TANK
The gas tank is a safe container for flammable fluids. It also plays the safety of chopper and the rider. The gas tank gives the comfortable seating for the rider.
Features Involved:
- Surface Sweep
- Surface Trim
- Boundary Surface
- Surface Knit
- Sweep Cut
- Fillet
- Mirror
- Shell
This model is a mirror model with a half sketched one. The Surface Sweep feature used more in this model. The Chopper sketch picture is used to sketch the splines right. The Decals are used to make the Gas tank or the Chopper itself to look good and attractive.
ASSEMBLY
Chassis is the first component inserted into the assembly model and fixed with respect to the planes. The Mid plane of the chassis is used more in the assembly as the other components are to be fully defined for the assembly.
- The chassis is fixed for the other components to be mounted. The heart of the Chopper Engine is placed on the bottom of the chassis.
- Pedal is attached to side of the chassis and the component is mirrored to the other side.
- Kickstand is attached to the left bottom side of chassis.
- Transmission belt is fixed between the two gear drives.
- Oil tank is attached to the Engine above casing.
- Rear wheel is attached to the endframe of the chassis and Rear fender is placed using appropriate concentric mates.
- Chain is inserted between the rear wheel sprocket and the Engine sprocket.
- The gas tank is placed over the top frame of the chassis.
- Front fork is attached to the front shaft of the chassis to give the look for the vehicle.
- And finally the front wheel and front fender are attached to the fork.
- The Front wheel, fender and fork are given a angular mate to move on both sides.
