MODELLING, ASSEMBLING AND RENDERING OF AN AMERICAN CHOPPER

INTRODUCTION:

The SOLIDWORKS® CAD software is a mechanical design automation application that lets designers quickly sketch out ideas, experiment with features and dimensions, and produce models and detailed drawings.

SOLIDWORKS uses a 3D design approach. As we can design a part, from the initial sketch to the final result, we can create a 3D model. From this model, we can create 2D drawings or mate components consisting of parts or subassemblies to create 3D assemblies. We can also create 2D drawings of 3D assemblies. When designing a model using SOLIDWORKS, we can visualize it in three dimensions, the way the model exists once it is manufactured.

In this report we had discussed about the modelling, assembling and rendering of an American chopper and included with tools which are used to model the chopper as well as the quick explanation of each parts.

OBJECTIVE:

The main objective of performing this modelling is to produce a detailed model of different parts of an American chopper, as well as assigning materials, paint and fabric to the model.

The other objective is to assemble the different parts of an American chopper, which is produced by us. After assembly we have to render the model with proper appearance and environment.

PARTS EXPLANATION:

The following are the major parts of an American chopper.

  • Transmission belt
  • Kick stand
  • Front fender
  • Rear fender
  • Chain
  • Oil tank
  • Pedal
  • Front wheel
  • Rear wheel
  • Front fork
  • Chassis
  • Engine
  • Gas tank

TRANSMISSION BELT

A belt is a loop of flexible material used to link two or more rotating shafts mechanically, most often parallel. Belts may be used as a source of motion, to transmit power efficiently or to track relative movement. Belts are looped over pulleys and may have a twist between the pulleys, and the shafts need not be parallel. So we had modelled a transmission belt by using solid works, and some of the important tools such as offset, adding relations such as tangency, extrude etc.

KICK STAND:

A kickstand is a device on a motor cycle that allows the bike to be kept upright without leaning against another object or the aid of a person. A kickstand is usually a piece of metal that flips down from the frame and makes contact with the ground. It is generally located in the middle of the bike or towards the rear.

For modelling kick stand we have to use tools such as pierce relation, loft boss base, dome, extrude cut, split, extrude, etc.

FENDER:

Fender is the American english term for the part of an automobile, motor vehicle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

FRONT FENDER
we had modelled the front vender by using commands like Trim entities, revolve feature, split feature etc.

REAR FENDER:

we had modelled the front vender by using commands like Trim entities, revolve feature, split feature etc.

CHAIN:

A chain is a serial assembly of connected pieces, called links, typically made of metal, with an overall character similar to that of a rope in that it is flexible and curved in compression but linear, rigid, and load-bearing in tension. A chain may consist of two or more links. Chains can be classified by their design, which can be dictated by their use:

For modelling chain, we had used the feature such as curved driven pattern, creating blocks, coincide, tangency, concentric, extrude, fillets, etc.

CHAIN part is one of the complicated part in producing a model.

OIL TANK:

A oil tank is a safe container for flammable fluids. Though any storage tank for fuel may be so called, the term is typically applied to part of an engine system in which the fuel is stored and propelled or released (pressurized gas) into an engine.

Some of the features used in this model are combined feature, extrude, fillet etc.

PEDAL:

Pedal is a bike accessory which is used to place our foot during our journey. A good designed pedal is used in this model.

Some of the features used for pedal are extrude, selected contours, revolve, fillet, offset, linear pattern, etc.

WHEEL:

A wheel is a circular block of a hard and durable material at whose centre has been bored a circular hole through which is placed an axle bearing about which the wheel rotates when a moment is applied by gravity or torque to the wheel about its axis.

FRONT WHEEL:

The front wheel is mounted at the front side of a bike. The front wheel does not require any torque, it rotates about its axis due to gravity.

The features used for creating a front wheel are revolve option, extruding by midplane, offset, mirror, extrude cut, extruding by up to vertex, revolve cut, circular pattern, combine, fillet, linear sketch pattern, solid revolve etc.

REAR WHEEL:

The rear wheel is mounted at the back side of a bike. It receives torque from the engine and it rotates about its axis.

The features used for creating a rear wheel are revolve option, extruding by midplane, offset, mirror, extrude cut, extruding by up to vertex, revolve cut, circular pattern, combine, fillet, linear sketch pattern, solid revolve etc.

FRONT FORK

A motorcycle fork connects a motor cycles front wheel and axle to its frame, typically via a yoke, also known as a triple clamp, which consists of an upper yoke joined to a lower yoke via a steering stem, a shaft that runs through the steering head, creating the steering axis. Most forks incorporate the front suspension and front brake and allow the front wheel to rotate about the steering axis so that the bike may be steered. Most handlebars attach to the top clamp in various ways, while clip-on handlebars clamp to the fork tubes, either just above or just below the upper triple clamp.

The features used for front fork are convert entities, projected curve, revolve, extrude, offset, fillet, linear pattern, move copy bodies, combine, revolve cut, mirror, etc.

CHASSIS:

A motorcycle’s chassis or frame forms its skeleton. All the components of a motorcycle, like the suspension, wheels, fuel tank, seats, handlebars etc, are attached to this base structure which lends a motorcycle its strength and ability to handle well.

The features used for chassis are projected curve, this curve is created by using blue print, revolve, trim, fillet, extrude, combine, revolve cut, blue, etc. to produce the chassis.

ENGINE

An engine or motor is a machine designed to convert one form of energy into mechanical energy. heat engine, like the internal combustion engine, burn a fuel, to create heat which is then used to do work. Electic motor convert electrical energy into mechanical motion.

The features used for engine are blue print this we have created projected curve and we produced the composite curve, and we used trim, combine, extrude, extrude cut, revolve, fillet, linear pattern, etc, to model the engine.

GAS TANK:

A fuel tank (or petrol tank) is a safe container for flammable fluids. Though any storage tank for fuel may be so called, the term is typically applied to part of an engine system in which the fuel is stored and propelled or released (pressurized gas) into an engine.

The features used for modelling gas tank are by using blue prints we had created a projected curve, and we had created a sweep surface. And used the trim surface to remove external surface. And we had used the surface loft for producing the surface of gas tank. We had used boundary surface for creating the remaining surface of gas tank. Then we used mirror option to mirror the surface. We have used extrude feature to create the seat and again we used boundary surface option to close the surface of gas tank.

ASSSEMBLY OF AMERICAN CHOPPER:

The parts which are produced are made to assembled in the solid works. Various mates like coincident, concentric, tangency, distance, limit angle, parallel, position, advanced mates etc were used.

First the chassis is inserted and remaining parts like engine is mounted on it and respected mates are used to make them constraints. Other parts like kick stand, pedal is also inserted at respected places by using respected mates and the pedal was made to mirrored. Front fork, front vender, front wheel was added and mates was also used. Finally, chain, rear vender, transmission belt, rear wheel was also inserted at respected places by using respected mates.

RENDERING:

Rendering is the process of generating a photorealistic or non photorealistic image from a 2D or 3D model. The resulting image is referred to as the render.

By using photo view 360 or solid works visualize we can perform the rendering option. In this rendering we had added decals, lights, appearance and environment to the model. In order to make the American chopper as realistic as possible.
