MODELLING OF SUN SEEKER PREDATOR YACHT

MODELLING OF SUN SEEKER PREDATOR YACHT

Objective

  • To learn the surface modelling and surface modelling tools for modelling of the parts of yacht and assemble them in Solidworks.
  • To create the photo realistic rendering of the yacht in PhotoView 360.

Introduction

Solidworks have different software that are used by mechanical, electrical, civil etc. engineering branches. Here we use Solidworks CAD modelling software which use for 3d and surface designing, plastic and mould designing, photo realistic rendering, FEA analysis etc.

In this project we do solid and surface modelling for designing of parts and then these parts where assemble together in Solidworks software.

Parts designed in Solidworks are:-

Blueprint setup:- Blueprint setup consists of pictures of front, top, back, side view of the yacht. It is used for designing of hull, superstructure, front seat, middle seat, rear seat, radarmast, garage door.

Hull:-

Hull is the base of the yacht where the other parts of yacht are attached. The structures mounted on the hull are:-

  • Seats
  • Superstructure from where the yacht can be controlled
  • Propellers
  • Propeller shafts
  • Staircase
  • Staircase handles
  • Garage for the parking of the car
  • Railings around the edge boundary of the deck of the hull
  • Rooms with windows inside for living for the people on the yacht

First using blueprint setup the one half of the surfaces of the deck were designed and then knitted together to become a solid and the other half was mirrored. The deck is created and using face offset option with dimension as 0 mm deck surface is created. The deck and the stairs were given wooden decals for the wooden appearance of the deck and stairs.

Some tools used for the designing of the hull are:-

  • Surface loft
  • Surface trim
  • Surface extrude
  • Surface fill
  • Surface knit
  • Shell
  • Cut extrude
  • Boss extrudes
  • Fillet and chamfer
  • Dome
  • Helix/Spiral
  • Projected curve
  • Sweep
  • Revolve
  • Extrude-Thin
  • 3D sketch
  • Split line
  • Split
  • Linear pattern
  • Mirror

Superstructure

It is mounted on the deck of the yacht. Superstructure has the cabin which all the controllers of the yacht. There is swimming pool provided in it.

At the top of the superstructure a Radar and Radarmast are installed for assistance in navigation and communication.

The deck surface is imported and is used as the base for the designing of the superstructure. Since its symmetrical one half of the surfaces were designed and knitted together to become a solid and then other half was mirrored. The superstructure is design using following commands:-

  • Surface extrude
  • Surface sweep
  • Ruled surface
  • Surface trim
  • Surface loft
  • Surface fill
  • Surface knit
  • Projected curve
  • Delete face
  • Boss-extrude
  • Cut-extrude
  • Surface extend
  • Surface offset
  • Thicken
  • Dome
  • Sweep
  • Extrude-thin
  • Split line
  • Mirror
  • 3D sketch

Front seat

It is attached on the deck in front swimming pool. The deck surface is imported and is used as the base for the designing of the front seat. In this half of the front seat is designed and then mirror. The commands used in this to design are:-

  • Surface extrude
  • Surface sweep
  • Surface fill
  • Surface trim
  • Surface loft
  • Surface knit
  • Revolve
  • Cut-extrude
  • Chamfer
  • Fillet
  • Dome
  • Mirror

Middle-seat

It is attached on the deck. The deck surface is imported and is used as the base for the designing of the middle seat. Middle-seat is designed in U-shape with table mounted at the centre.

  • Boss-extrude
  • Cut-extrude
  • Mirror
  • Fillet and chamfer

Rear seat

Here again the deck surface is imported and used as base. Rear seat mounted on edge of the deck. There are gates attached to the seat. There are cabin with handles on it for storage on sides of the seats. Also there flag attached at the end of the seat. The commands used to design rear seat:-

  • Surface sweep
  • Surface offset
  • Surface trim
  • Surface knit
  • Surface extend
  • Surface extrude
  • Surface loft
  • Surface fill
  • Boss-extrude
  • Cut-extrude
  • Revolve
  • Mirror
  • Sweep

Propellers

There are three propellers are used in this yacht assembly. The propellers are attached to the engine shafts. The propellers rotate to generate thrust for the yacht to move forward.

One wing of the propeller was designed on the hub using the commands mentioned below and then the circular pattern was used around the axis of hub.

  • Revolve
  • Cut-extrude
  • Loft
  • Fillet
  • Circular pattern

Radarmast

Here again the deck surface is imported and used as base. It is used for the communication and transmission. The following commands are used for radamast:-

  • Boss-extrude
  • Revolve
  • Sweep
  • Projected curve
  • Mirror
  • Dome
  • Shell

Radar

It is mounted on radarmast for assistance in navigation. It is modelled using following tools:-

  • Boss-extrude
  • Cut-extrude
  • Mirror
  • Split line

Garage door

The exported body of garage which was modelled during the hull design was imported. The commands used are:-

  • Cut-extrude
  • Shell
  • Mirror

Assembly

All the parts modelled which are mentioned are above are assembled in Solidworks assembly. Some parts are mounted on the deck of the hull and some of them are mounted on the superstructure. The coincident mate was used for most parts. Only for radar and garage door concentric mate was used.

Rendering of the yacht

Rendering feature is used for giving realistic effect to the model. It is an important feature used to know how the model once manufactured will look in the actual environment. Rendering is also used to dramatize the look of product for advertisement. In this project we used PhotoView 360.

Conclusion

All the parts of the Sunseeker Yacht were modelled and assembled in Solidworks and the assembly was rendered in PhotoView 360 successfully.
