Modelling and simulation of flow through a flowbench

PROJECT REPORT

MODELLING AND SIMULATION OF FLOW THROUGH A FLOWBENCH

OBJECTIVE :

The aim of this project is to create a 3D model of a flow bench and run flow analysis. You will be obtaining a plot of lift vs mass flow rate. You need to do the following

  • Grid dependence test.
  • For three grids run your simulation at a particular valve lift and explain your results.
  • Effect of valve lift on mass flow rate.
  • Once you have decided the best grid, run a parametric sweep to show the effect of valve lift on mass flow rate.

GEOMETRIC PARAMETERS :

1. External diameter of cylinder 0.10 m
2. External diameter of inlet port 0.025 m
3. Shell 0.0015 m
4. Intel Total Pressure 101325 Pa at temperature 293.2 K.
5. Outlet Static Pressure 200000 Pa at temperature 293.2 K.

CAD MODEL :

PROCEDURE :

FIRST, Model the geometry of cylinder and valve with the given dimensions.

SECOND, Constraint Valve dimensions do that it moves only in vertical direction.Save the model.

THIRD, Setup a new flow simulation project and Insert Boundary Condition as intel as total pressure and outlet as static pressure and insert surface goals as mass flow rate.

FOURTH, Run the Simulations and observe the effect of Grid levels, and Velocity and Pressure cut plots, and different valve lift range =0.001m to 0.007m. Create Flow Trajectories for each case. Do the required post-processing.

RESULTS :

GRID REFINEMENT:

1. Level 3 (Velocity Cut Plot):

2. Level 4 (Velocity Cut Plot):

3. Level 5 (Velocity Cut Plot):

EFFECT OF VALVE LIFT ON MASS FLOW RATE, VELOCITY AND PRESSURE.

CASE 4. VALVE LIFT = 0.004 m

SURAFACE GOALS OF MASS FLOW RATE

Conclusion:

1. The Velocity of fluid and pressure increases with increse in valve lift as more fluid enters the chamber.

2. We got more accurate results as grid level increases.
