Modelling and simulation of flow through a flowbench
Aim:
To study Valve Lift vs Mass flow rate characteristics on Inlet valve opening.
Introduction:
Inlet valve was designed along with cylinder and inlet manifold. First Mesh size was optimised at certain valve height to find out highest mass flow rate and following a parametric study to find out the Valve Lift vs Mass flow rate characteristics.
MESH SIZE USED : 3 , 4 , 5
Number of Iteration : 500 cycles
Total Pressure : Refers to combination of static and dynamic pressure.
Fluid will lose its total pressure when it flows.
Optimum Mesh size :
Mesh size: 3
Pressure distribution
Velocity distribution:
Mass flow rate:
Mesh size: 4

Velocity Profile:

Optimum found : 5 mesh size based on higher mass flow rate
PARAMETRIC STUDY :
Boundary condition :
Inlet Total Pressure : 1013250 Pa
Outlet static pressure : 50325 Pa
Parametric study data:

from cylinder wall.

Result :
Here design point 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 & 8 refers to 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm & 9mm
As we can see Mass flow rate increases as the valve Height ( opening ) increases. We can see as Valve Lift increases both Pressure and Velocity decreases.
