MBD Simulation on a Piston Assembly
AIM:-
- To design the different parts of the Piston Assembly.
- To Assemble the parts created
- To do Motion Analysis on the Piston Assembly and , rotary motion is provided to the crankshaft
INTRODUCTION:-
Piston Assembly motion analysis is study of the reciprocating motion of the piston in the cyclinder and the motion of the assembly attached i.e, connecting rod, end cap, crank shaft etc. Piston Assembly comprises of the following parts:-
- Piston Head
- Wrist Pin
- Connecting Rod
- End Cap
- Crankshaft
Problem Statement:-
Model all the parts and then assemble them in SolidWorks. The motion analysis is going to be carried out in three different conditions,
| Sl.No |
Wrist Pin Offset ` |
Crank Speed (Rpm) |
| 1 | "0" mm | 2000 |
| 2 | 10 mm Positive | 2000 |
| 3 | 10 mm Negative | 2000 |
Design Of the parts:-
Piston head
Piston head( 10mm Positive Offset)
Piston head( 10mm Negative Offset)
Wrist Pin
Connecting Rod
End Cap
Crankshaft
ASSEMBLY:-
- First we insert the Crankshaft
- Then we mate it with the planes of assembly so that it can only rotate
- Insert the End Cap and Connecting Rod
- Mate the End cap and connecting rod (axis and face)
- Mate them with Crankshaft
- Mate the connecting rod with piston head and Wrist pin
- Mate all the parts properly
RESULTS OF MOTION ANALYSIS:-:-
Case 1: When Wrist Pin Offset is 0 mm
Linear Displacement of the Piston Head
Case 2: When Wrist Pin Offset is 10mm (Positive)
Linear Displacement of the Piston Head
Case 3: When Wrist Pin Offset is 10mm (Negative)
Linear Displacement of the Piston Head
Comparison of all the three linear displacement graphs in a single graph

CONCLUSION:
- The Linear Displacement graph is smooth for all the three cases.
- When the offset is zero the piston displacement will be greater than the other cases.
- Angular Velocity remains in all the three cases.
- Plot obtain in the first cases regular in motion. It is smoother than all the three curves.
