MBD Simulation on a Piston Assembly
IC Engine Piston Assembly
Aim: To create an assembly of IC engine piston assembly and study the motion analysis.
Objective:
1. Create parts of IC engine piston assembly.
2. Assemble them to create assembly.
3. Doing motion study on different cases.
4. Obtain the plots for motion study done.
5. Explain the results.
Parts Designed:
Connecting Rod
Crank
End cap
Gudgeon pin
Piston
Assembling all parts
The Motion analysis of the piston assembly is done with reference to the following cases
|
Sr. No. |
Wrist pin offset (mm) |
Crank speed (rpm) |
|
1. |
0 mm |
2000 |
|
2. |
10 mm (+ve) |
2000 |
|
3. |
10 mm (-ve) |
2000 |
During manufacturing of piston assembly, aligning the crank axis and wrist pin axis is normal about a long time ago. But to increase the performance of engine, offsetting the axes of crank and wrist pin plays a major role. First reason to offset the axes is to achieve reduce high amount of noise generated during working of an engine. The second reason is to increase engine output by reducing internal friction.
Case 1:
In this case no offset is provided between crank axis and wrist pin axis.
Plot obtained
Case 2:
Here an offset of +10 mm is provided
Plots obtained
Case 3:
An offset of -10 mm is provided
Plot obtained
Superimposed Plot of all cases:
Result:
As observed, there is not much difference in the plots of all the three cases. The only differences present are in the starting position of piston and a slight change in the motion at the start and at the end. The motion study is done for a small amount of time. To obtain a smooth graph, the time for motion study should be increased.
