MBD Simulation on a Piston Assembly
TITLE : MULTIBODY DYNAMICS using solidworks of simulation on a Piston Assembly.
OBJECTIVES :
The Main objective is as follow :
- To Modeling the parts and then assembly of parts to form piston assembly.
- To perform motion analysis on the piston assembly with different wrist pin offset value.
- Analyse the resulting plots i.e of Linear displacement vs Time.
Parts to be design are:
- Piston head.
- Gudgeon pin.
- Connecting rod.
- End cap.
- Crank.
Geometrical Creation :
- Firstly we have to design all the parts seperatly that are required in assembly.
- Then, insert the parts one by one in assembly workarea.
- Then, apply constraints on the parts.
Motion Analysis :
- After complete assembly, turn ON the Solidworks Motion from GUI.
- Then, Motor is provided at the crank to give rotary motion at 2000 rpm.
- Then, we set frames per second to 7200 for more accurate results and plot and select precise contact.
- Then, Solid body contact is done between the body in contact. There are total four contact pairs :
- Crank and End cap,
- Crank and connecting rod,
- connecting rod and wrist pin,
- wrist pin and piston head.
- Then, Gravity is turned ON in downward direction w.r.t. assembly.
- The results and plots are get by taking six rotation of the crank.
3D Models :
- Crank

3. End cap :
4. Wrist pin :
5. Piston head :

ANALYSIS :
There are three different cases are given are as follows :
| Sl.No |
Wrist Pin Offset ` |
Crank Speed (Rpm) |
| 1 | "0" mm | 2000 |
| 2 | 10 mm Positive | 2000 |
| 3 | 10 mm Negative | 2000 |
Case 1 : 0 mm offset if crank is rotating in clockwise direction.
Plot of Linear displacement vs Time : CASE 1
Case 2 : 10 mm positive offset if crank is rotating in clockwise direction
Plot of Linear displacement vs Time : CASE 2
Case 3 : 10 mm negative offset if crank is rotating in clockwise direction.
Plot of Linear displacement vs Time : CASE 3
