Internal Geneva Mechanism

Internal Geneva Mechanism

OBJECTIVES:

  1. create the 3D model of the internal Geneva mechanism.
  2. Perform motion analysis by rotating the driver wheel at 10rpm.
  3. Obtain the following plots
  4. Contact force (between driving and the driven wheel) as a function of time.
  5. Angular Displacement of the driven wheel.
  6. Compare the contact forces with and without "Precise contact"
  7. Show image for precise contact selection
  8. Export the results that you get to Excel and make the plots over there

INTRODUCTION:

A multibody dynamic (MBD) system is one that consists of solid bodies, or links, that are connected to each other by joints that restrict their relative motion. The study of MBD is the analysis of how mechanical systems move under the influence of forces, also known as forwarding dynamics. A study of the inverse problem, i.e. what forces are necessary to make the mechanical system move in a specific manner is known as inverse dynamics.

Geneva mechanism, also called Geneva Stop, one of the most commonly used devices for producing intermittent rotary motion, characterized by alternate periods of motion and rest with no reversal in direction. It is also used for indexing (i.e., rotating a shaft through a prescribed angle).

A contact force is any force that requires contact to occur. Contact forces are ubiquitous and are responsible for most visible interactions between macroscopic collections of matter.

The angular displacement is defined as the angle through which an object moves on a circular path. It is the angle, in radians, between the initial and final positions

Provided 2D CAD drawings.

Created 3D model of the internal Geneva mechanism:

PROCEDURE:

  1. The 3D model is developed
  2. The parts are assembled
  3. The motion of the wheels is to be constrained to rotation about their axes.
  4. A motor is defined at the axis of the driving wheel.
  5. Contact established between the wheels.
  6. required plots are to be extracted.
  7. Precision contact used to calculate contact forces more accurately.

PLOTS:

  1. Angular displacement and contact forces without Precision Contact(10 RPM).

2. Angular displacement and contact forces with Precision Contact(10 RPM).

3. Angular displacement and contact forces with Precision Contact(20 RPM).

4. Angular displacement and contact forces without Precision Contact(20 RPM).

OBSERVATIONS:

Precision Contact gives more accurate results.

Higher forces observed at the entrance of the slot.
