Internal Geneva Mechanism by solidworks motion analysis
GENEVA MECHANISM USING SOLIDWORKS 2019
AIM:
Our aim is to create the models and assemblies of an internal Geneva mechanism and create a motion analysis to determine its contact forces.
OBJECTIVE:
- Create a model for the internal Geneva components.
- Assemble the components to a complete assemblage.
- Motion analysis the assemblage.
GENEVA MECHANISM:
The Geneva drive or Maltese cross is a gear mechanism that translates a continuous rotation movement into intermittent rotary motion.
WORKING:
- The rotating drive wheel is usually equipped with a pin that reaches into a slot located in the other wheel (driven wheel) that advances it by one step at a time.
- The drive wheel also has an elevated circular blocking disc that "locks" the rotating driven wheel in position between steps.

A TOUCH OF HISTORY:
- The name was originated, as these mechanisms were used in watch making purposes in Geneva. (The classical origin of watches).
- These mechanisms were capsuled in oil for efficiency and reduce wear.
- The no of slots can be increased to get reduced angular displacement.
APPLICATIONS:
- Used in watches.
- Used in Cameras and projectors in earlier time to change each frame at a required fps. This is the reason for the potholes in the film strip.
- Used in CNC machines for turret applications.
