Frequency analysis on rotating shaft
Aim:
To model a rotating shaft in solid works and made a frequency analysis (FEA) on it to find the critical frquencies on the rotating shaft.
Objectives:
- To model a rotating shaft in solid works.
- To conduct the frequency analysis on that shaft.
- To compare the results in all the 5 modes.
- To list the resonant frequencies.
Frequency analysis:
One of the important categories under finite element analysis is frequency analysis. The frequency analysis is a major analysis in designing the rotating components. The frequency analysis can help us to find the deformations due to the frequencies applied on the machines or parts.
Shaft modelling:
The rotating shaft is modelled based on the image shown below,
The dimensions are provided based on the above image so that it seems to be fit as in the image.
The final shaft which is designed with the above dimensions are shown below,
Simulation setup:
Initially, the material should be assigned for the shaft. The alloy steel material is assigned in this case study.
The fixture geometry should be assigned. In this simulation, the both ends of the rotating shaft is fixed by the bearing fixture.
The fine mesh is provided for the object to get the result with greater accuracy.
Results and discussions:
The frequency analysis was done in the solid works with the above given setup. The 5 mode shapes are obtained as a result of simulation. The result plot of various modes are shown below,
Mode 1:
Mode 2:
Mode 3:
Mode 4:
Mode 5:
Comparison plot:
The frequencies and the period values of all the modes are represented below,
The result shows that the maximum frequency is applied on the modes 4 and 5. It also takes less period.

Conclusion:
Thus, the rotating shaft is modelled and the frequency analysis was made on it. The maximum frequency was applied on the shaft on mode 4 and mode 5.
