Frequency analysis of a rotating shaft
Aim:
To carry out a frequency analysis of a rotating shaft in SOLIDWORKS.
Theory:
Procedure:
- Create a 2-D sketch with the basic dimensions of the sketch and using mirror function complete the 2-D cross-sectional sketch.
- Using revolve tool, create a 360 degree revolve of the sketch making it into a 3-D part model.
- Now assign a specific material to the rotating shaft i.e. alloy steel.
- Now create a new study in the simulation option of the SOLIDWORKS to perform FEA.
- Now select the frequency option in the given list.
- For doing a frequency analysis on this rotational shaft, we must input the bearing fixture in both the ends of the shaft.
- Now create a mesh, in my case I used 6mm mesh with 0.3mm tolerance.
- Now run the simulation.
Results:
Mode 1:
Mode 2:
Mode 3:
Mode 4:
Mode 5:
Different resonant frequencies obtained:
Conclusion:
From this analysis, it is clear that the frequency varies for different modes and its amplitude is directly proportional to the frequency inducing the resonance.
