Challenge

Flow over an airfoil

Theory :

Airfoil - cross section of body placed in airstream to generate useful aerodynamics

Angle of Attack (AoA) - angle between wind direction and reference line on surface of airfoil (or any other such structure)

Aim : Simulation of flow over an airfoil (NACA0017) for different AoA

Wizard input condition :

Analysis type - External Flow

Fluid - air

Time dependent - Total time : 5s

Time step - 1s

In velocity - 600 m/s in positive x-direction

(Rest default)

Computational Domain dimensions :

Local Mesh Refinement level on airfoil surface :- 4

Simulation Results :

I) For AoA 0° :

II) For A0A 2° :

III) AoA 4° :

IV) AoA 6° :

V) AoA 8° :

VI) AoA 10° :

Observation made from results :

Increase in angle of attack leads to increase in lift which in turn changes the induced drag.
