Challenge

Final Project: Design of an Electric Vehicle

An existing model is modified to accommodate a 3 Tone vehicle and the following changes are made:

1. Drive Cycle: Wide open throttle/acceleration performance from 0 to 100 kmph takes 52.759 sec.

2. Environment: 26.85 DegC, 101325 bar of absolute pressure, 0% grade and no wind speed.

3. Driver: Automatic shift type, total tractive force, resistive forces and coefficient is calculated via MATLAB (attached).

4. Controllers:

  • Torque vs Speed was designed for a larger electric motor. The total brake torque request is determined based on brake pressure and the parameters of the disc brakes. Regenerative braking is defined as the minimum value between the brake pressure and the motor torque. The Power Management subsystem is responsible for determining the allowed regenerative torque. If the braking torque request exceeds what the motor can provide, the remaining torque is supplied by the friction brakes.

The Power Management algorithm operates as follows:

1. Estimate the electrical power based on mechanical power using an efficiency map.

2. Verify if the estimated electrical power is within the limits of the battery power.

3. If the power is within the limits, utilize the motor torque command.

4. If the power surpasses the limit, utilize a restricted motor torque command.

  • BMS: an existing BMS model Simulink library model is used. Battery spec: 300V, 400Ah with SOC starting at 100%.

5. Electric Plant.

  • The battery used is an existing Simulink library block. 96S31P, 4 modules.
  • A starter motor (also a DC motor) is used due to the unavailability of a DC motor block in the library. Hence limited.
  • No accessory load is considered.
  • Drivetrain: All wheel drive with a final gear ratio of 27 is considered due to a small motor.
  • An existing disc brake model and a 5 DOF model are used. Normal forces for a 3-tone vehicle are used.

6. Results to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph

  • Distance travelled: 2.012km.
  • Total power used: kW
  • Mileage:74.84 kWh/100km
  • SOC Drop: 8%

Conclusion:

DC motor has less power than permanent magnetic motor. Vehicle can achieve better performance with PMSM.
