Challenge

Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

AIM

To Calculate the Wheel Arc area and prove whether the car will pass the Standards or Not.

WHEEL ARCH

It is a semicircular profile above wheels designed for enclosing tire within the fender. The wheel arch is designed considering all possible motions the tire undergoes while the vehicle is in motion. The wheel arch also ensures stopping any debris that could possibly fly outside the wheel well and hit pedestrians.

WHEEL ARCH REGULATIONS

Regulations are fixed with respect to the regions population. If there is less number of population then the driving speed will be more and derbis hit to the pedestrian will increase. So based on that, the OEM set standards to meet the regulations saftey test. Which enables them to get 5star rating. If they fail to meet with the regulations then the saftey star rating will also be reduced accordingly.

PROCEDURE

DATA

OEM STANDARDS based on EUROPEAN REGULATION – Clearance value should be greater than 10mm.

SA-SA    <10mm; SB-SB   <10mm; SC-SC   <10mm; SD-SD  <10mm; SE-SE   <10mm

MEASURED OEM STANDARDS based on EUROPEAN REGULATION

Created a sketch with respect to the above diagram to measure the wheel arc clearance and to ensure that the car will pass the Standards or Not.

MEASURED WHEEL ARC AREA

Section          Min.                 Clearance      Measured                WAR         Result
          SA        <10mm          10           PASS
          SB        <10mm        9.973           PASS
          SC        <10mm        2.965            FAIL
          SD        <10mm        0.651            FAIL
          SE        <10mm        2.078            FAIL

CONCLUSION

Based on the above result we know that the car didnot pass the Standards. And Hence it will have the least star rating from the European Regulation Pedestrian Safety test.
