Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
AIM:
To calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and to check whether the car passes the European standard.
WHEEL ARCH GIVEN:

EUROPEAN STANDARD:

- Take the projection of the wheel and the fender.
- Sketch the centre of the wheel circle.
- Draw horizontal and vertical perpendicular axes from the centre of the wheel circle.
- Draw two lines at 30 degrees and 50 degrees from the centre.
- Mark a point on the fender line at 150mm from the horizontal as shown in the above figure.
- Draw a line to the point from the centre.
- Draw a line that is between the 50 degree line and the line drawn on the 150mm point.
- Measure the distances between the points on the wheel circumference and fender curve. All of them should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European standard.
- Then the horizontal distances from SA, SB, and SC points to the fender curve should be at least 5mm.
- Check whether the design passes these conditions and conclude whether it can pass the European regulations.
WORKING:

The above figure shows that the sketch, which was drawn using the europen standard procedures. Points SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE are annotated.
To Measure the distances between the points on the wheel circumference and fender curve. All of them should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European standard.
SA-SA:

SA-SA = 25.992mm > 10
SB-SB:

SB-SB = 43.641mm > 10mm
SC-SC :

SC-SC = 38.36mm > 10mm
SD-SD :

SD-SD = 42.381mm > 10mm
SE-SE:

SE-SE = 47.625mm > 10mm
Then, the horizontal distances from SA, SB, and SC points to the fender curve should be at least 5mm.
Here in the above figure,
- SA-SA = 9.945 > 5
- SB-SB = 10 >5
- SC-SC = 0.116 < 5.
CONCLUSION :
CASE 1 : To Measure the distances between the points on the wheel circumference and fender curve. All of them should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European standard.
Here in this case, points SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE are all greater than 10. So it passes the European regulation.
CASE 2 : Then, the horizontal distances from SA, SB, and SC points to the fender curve should be at least 5mm.
Here in this case, points SA-SA and SB-SB are greater than 5. So it passes the European regulation.
But SC-SC is lesser than 5, so it fails the European regulation.
