Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
What is a Fender ?
The fender of a car is the body kit that is attached to the sides of the vehicle. Most fenders are attached to the arches of the wheels. They are used for various reasons, not just to enhance the aesthetics of vehicles.
Fenders are also installed in vehicles to improve their aerodynamics, protect the car parts under the chassis from foreign objects on the road or pavement, and prevent mud and debris from being thrown in the air by the tires are running.
Primary Function of Fender :-
The main purpose why there are fenders on cars is that they shield the wheels and they protect the passengers, the pedestrians, and the other vehicles from stones, mud, liquid, and other debris that can fly in the air because of the speeding rotating wheels while the car is running.
Advantages:-
1.Easy to replace or install.
2.Economical.
- may be mounted to give cover over a large vertical range.
Disadvantages:-
- susceptible to damage by surging motion of vessel.
- Long length necessary to spread reactive force.
- Larger than other elastomeric units to absorb same energy.
Fender Drip area Pedestrian Safety:-
- A parting shall be provided within a range of provided within a range of 47.5mm from SRL, if there is no problem in terms of styling.
- SRL (Reference line on the Hood side a line in which the fender makes contact with surface inclined by 45degrees with respect to GL.
- The height shall be 80mm minimum (child and WAD1700 maximum).
- The height in the range of WAD1700 Minimum shall be 94mm (+14mm that corresponds to the amount of increase in inertial energy) to meet the adult impact requirement.
- The first important factor in Fender is drip area.
STUDY OF WHEEL GUARD REQIUREMENT FOR FDR AND
BMPR:-
Wheel arch having some standard specifications.
Japan Requirements :-
- Measure clearance L of tire, hub cap and fender in three different position within area k and produce clearence check chart to validate.
- Clearence must be greater than 5mm in all the three positions.
WHEEL GUARD REQUIREMENT:-
The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5mm at a line 30 forward and 50 rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
EUROPEAN REQUIREMENTS:-
At all five sections the cleareance ‘L’ value should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European regulations.
Wheel guard requirement:-
The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5mm at a line 30degrees forward abd 50degrees reaward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
US REGULATION REQUIREMENT:-
- Make clearance check details on all positions from -100 to 100 and make the clearance check table.
- All values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulation.
- The value of ‘a’ shall be 5mm at the a line 30 deg forward and 50 deg rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
ANALYSIS:
- There are different regulations in this regard based on different regions.
- These analysis has been done by using European regulation.
