Challenge

Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Fender is the part of automobile that covers a wheel .There is rear fender as well as front fender. Its purpose is to prevent vehicle and pedastrains from throwing of sand mud rocks etc while moving the vehicle .

while designing a fender many rules has to be followed.

  • functional requirements
  • important regulations
  • drip area
  • wheel arch
  • baffle area
  • front crash regulations and requirements
  • Gap and Flushness requirements

There are two types of bumper

Full bumper type

Half bumper type

Main mountings on a fender are

To body

A pillar

Sill

Cowl

Drip

While designing the drip area several rules has to followed

ie drip should be 150 mm away from frontal area and 200 mm away from A pillar zone.

proper draft should be given to the design inorder to make the tooling possible.

for designing a wheel arch , different countries provide different standards according to their roads and terrains.

for example

A certain distance should be maintained between the outer of the wheel and outward point of the fender .

In Japan its 5 mm

we took three reference point from the middle of the wheel and at an angle of 30 degree and 50 degree.then project that point to the fender and measure the shortest distance from the pointa and wheel from top view.

But in Europe standard the distance is 10 mm and we took two more points ither than that of japan .

US standard is different from these,we took several points like 180, 150, 135 ,120,90,60,44,30,0,-10 deg and the value sould be more than 5mm at aline 30 deg forward and 50 deg rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

The given wheel and fender is checked weather they satisfy the european standard . as shown in the fig

By meauring the distance from each point we get the values of

POINT DISTANCE RESULT
SA middle (90 deg) 9.94 mm NOT VALID
SB (30 deg) 10 mm VALID
SC (50 deg) 2.47 mm NOT VALID
SD 1.45 mm NOT VALID
SE 0.4 mm NOT VALID

From the table only one point is at the given standard all other point do not satisfy the standard

so , The given wheel arch do not pass the european standard
