Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Aim: To decide whether the given design passes the European standards or not.
Given Design:
FENDER:
- Fender is the US English term for the part of an automobile (vehicle body) that frames a wheel well (the fender underside).
- Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
- When vehicle is moving, tyres pick up stones and others and hurl them in all directions. Fenders are basically present to prevent any injuries to pedestrians and contain the motion of these particles
- Most passenger automobiles have four fenders, one over each wheel. For vehicles with a narrow car body that exposes the tire, the fender is an exposed curve over the top of the tire. For wide body vehicles that cover the tire, the fender forms the wheel well surrounding the tire, and is not directly visible from above the car body.
- Wheel wells tend to be much larger than the diameter of the tire, because they do not move with the tire suspension and consequently must be large enough to allow the full range of tire motion on the suspension without touching the interior of the wheel well.
- More elaborate designs include fender skirts for enclosing the outside edge of the wheel well, and stylized pontoon fenders for exposed fenders.
FENDER WHEEL ARCH:
- Fender wheel arch is the semi-circular part positioned above the wheel of the vehicle.
- the car was the large in size , high defination headlights that extend to the wheel arch.
- the most important body was a change that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender.
Wheel-Arch:
Wheel arch is a semi-circular part positioned above the wheel of the vehicle, the shaped part of the bodywork of a car that allows the wheel to be accessed, and in the case of front wheels, enables them to be steered.

Wheel-Arch Design:
The wheel arch main design consideration is to provide a minimum clearance between the wheel arch and the outer edge of the wheel and the main purpose of the wheel arch area regulation is that seeing the front fender and tire from the top view, the tire must be inside the fender by a certain distance.
European standard:

- Clearance L at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE by producing clearance check chart to validate.
- In all five sections, the Clearance L value should be greater than 10 mm to satisfy the European regulations.
- Wheel guard requirement: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at line 30֯ forward and 50֯ rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel
Calculations of wheel Arch area - European Regulations
For calculation of clearance between wheel Arch and wheel we have to create a sketch on the outer most face of the wheel and the procedure as follows.
From the given part file we need to open in the NX cad and from the part file they give the fender and the wheel. So, now we need to check for the European regulations standard. Now we need to create the Datum plane at the outer most face of the wheel as shown in figure.

After that in that plane we sketch the lines and the give the required angle from the reference of the European standard drawing by using the Rapid dimension as shown in figure.

And using the text give the proper name to the lines and the dimensions are set as per the European standard as shown in the figure.

Then we need to measure the distance from the outer most wheel to the outer most wheel arch for that we add the some ponits on the face and the angle line as shown in figure.

And now using the analysis tab in the NX Cad in that click simple distance to measure the required distances as the European standard as shown in figure. from the SB line the clearence distance we measure is 43.52mm and the 50degree SC line the clearance distance is 38.30mm as shown in figure.

standards :
- "a" should be more than 5mm at line 30degree forward and 50degree.
- "L" should be greater than 10mm
From the measuing for clearence are given below
for "a" values
SB = 43.52 mm
SC = 38.30 mm
for "L" values
SB-SB = +10.0 mm
SA-SA = + 9.96 mm
SC-SC = + 3.0 mm
SD-SD = + 0.93 mm
SE-SE = - 2.29 mm
And the results are tabulated which is given below

Conclusion :
From the above results we can conclude that the Fender does not pass the European Regulations as the minimum clearance between the fender arch wheel to the outer most wheel is 10 mm and this design does not meet the this minimum clearance so this fender design is fail for the European Regulation standard.
