Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
INTRODUCTION:
The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender.

Objective:
To find whether the given fender and tyre specimen is eligible to pass the European regulations pf fender design criteria or not.
Different Regulations requirement for Fender wheel arc area
i) Japan Regulations Requirement:
- Measure clearance L of tyre, hub, cap and fender in three different positions with in area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
- Clearance must be greater than 5mm in all the three positions.
- Wheel gaurd requirement: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from central vertical axis of the wheel.

ii) U S Regulations Requirement:
- Make clearance check details on all positions from -100*to 100* and make the clearance check table.
- All values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulations.
- The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of the wheel.

iii) European Regulations Requirment:
- Measure CL L at sections SA-SA SB-SB SC-SC SD-SD SE-SE and produce CL check chart to validate.
- At all five sections the CL L value should be Greater than 10mm to satisfy the European Regulations.
- Wheel Guard Requirement: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* foraward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of the wheel.
Procedure:
- Sketch is drawn by considering wheel centre as origin point.
- Horizontal line is drawn from the origin for reference.
- A vertical line is drawn said to be 'SA'.
- 30* and 50* line are drawn from the vertical line 'SA' said to be 'SB' and 'SC' respectively.
- A line is drawn from the origin to a point on fender wheel arc which is 150mm apart from the Horizontal reference line, this line drawn is said to be 'SE'.
- A line is drawn from the origin to a point which lies exactly in the middle of point C and E, this line said to 'SD'.
- The point of intersection between the lines and wheel is noted.
- The point of intersection between the lines and the fender wheel arc is also noted.
- The point is later projected the fender.
- The clearance distance 'L' and 'a' is measured to check whether the given design will pass the standards or not.
Results Obtained:
1. Measuring the clearance value L:
a) Fender at section SA

b) Fender at section SB

c) Fender at section SC

d) Fender at section SD

e) Fender at section SE

Clearance 'L' value obtained at all 5 sections:
SECTION CLEARANCE 'L' (in mm) STATUS
SA 9.949 FAIL
SB 10 PASS
SC 0.113943 FAIL
SD 2.8621 FAIL
SE 5.9409 FAIL
2. Measuring the Clearance value 'a' for wheel Gaurd Requirement:
a) Finding the value of 'a' at line 30* forward from central vertical axis of the wheel:

b) Finding the value of 'a' at line 50* rearward from central vertical axis of the wheel:

SECTION ANGLE (in degrees) CLEARANCE 'a' (in mm) STATUS
SB 30 49.6428>5 PASS
SC 50 43.3590>5 PASS
CONCLUSION:
From the results obtained, we can conclude that the given fender will not pass the European Standards for Wheel Arch area.
