Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
INTRODUCTION:
WHEEL ARCH
It is a curved part of the fender positiioned right above the wheel. the wheel arch is designed such that it protects both the pedestrain and car cabin from mud, water rocks and other road spray. Different countries have different wheel arch regulations in place, and the wheel arch design has to comply with them to bedeemed usable in that country. For avoiding designing alterations of the same vechicle to meet the different regulations in different countries, the maximum values of the concerned regulation parameters are taken into consideration for design purpose.
Wheelarch comes with some standard specifications. When viewed from the front and the top side of the vechicle, If the wheel is protruding outside the fender, that would lead to more chipping while driving and compromises pedestrain as well as the vechile safety. taking these factors into consideration, the wheel has to be positioned inside the wheel.
Types Of Wheel Arch Regulations
1.JAPAN REGULATION I. Measure clearance L of tire, hub, cap & fenser in three different positions within area k and produce clearance checkchart to validate
II. Clearance must be greater than 5mm in all the three positions
III. Wheel gaurd requirements:the value of a shall be more than 5mm at line 30 degree forward and 50 rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
2. EUROPEAN STANDARD:

1.measure ther clearance value "L" at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD. SE-SE and ensure the value of "L".
2. If we pass the Euro regulations, first we need the clearance (L) value should be greater than the 10mm.
These are differernt regulations in this regard based on different regions. this case study has been done according to European regulations. As explained in the diagram below, the minimum clearence 'L' recommended at all the 5 points on the wheel arch shown here should be 10mm, the points being SB, SA, SC, SD, SE.
3. US REGULATIONS:
I. Make the clearance check details on all positions from 100* to 100*& make the clearance check table.
II. All values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulations. the value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50*.
III. Rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

By Using European Regulations The Values Ar

the SB is 9.9489mm.

the SA is 10mm

The SC is 0.1139mm.

the SD is -2.8875mm

The SE is -5.9973mm
TABLE A:
| S.NO | SECTION | CLEARANCE VALUE in(mm) | RESULTS |
| 1 | SA | 9.9489 | FAIL |
| 2 | SB | 10 | PASS |
| 3 | SC | -0.1139 | FAIL |
| 4 | SD | -2.8875 | FAIL |
| 5 | SE | -5.9973 | FAIL |
The above observations the positions SA SC SD SE are less than 10mm. the european standards are more than 10mm
CONCLUSION:
The styling team is required to modify the styling surface of the fender such that clearance 'L' at sections SA, SC, SD and SE is equal to or greater than 10 mm by increasing the curvature at those sections towards outside.
