Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Objective: To Calculate the wheel arc area and To verify whether the car passes the european standards or not.
Introduction
Wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. The wheel arch design should be such the wheel and protect the people inside the car cabin and also pedestrians from a splash of dust and water particles.
- The Letter L is to represent the clearances between the wheel edge and the wheel guard which should be greater than 10mm.
- Wheel gaurd requirement: The value of 'a' must be greater than 5mm at Bb and Cc which are at angles(degrees) 30 and 50 respectively.
Output for the given model
- A horizontal and vertical axis is drawn from the center of the wheel.
- The vertical axis intersection point is labelled as SA.
- similar references are drawn at 30 degree to the left and 50 degree to the right of the section SA and are named as SB and SC respectively.
- A line of 150mm is drawn perpendicular to the horizontal axis and the normal from that point on the fender gives us SE.
- The midpoint of the arc cut by the section SC and SE results in a new section SD.
- The value of L at each section and the value of a are found out to determine whether the fender satisfies the european standards.

The area of the wheel arch is = 24432.9334 sqmm
2)Determining the value of clearances 'L'

3) For section Cc L = 0.113667mm.
4) For section Dd L = 3.0777mm.
5) For section Ee L = 5.9751mm.

3) Determining the value of wheel guard clearance 'a'.
1. For section Bb 'a' = 46.1330mm
2. for section Cc 'a' = 39.4896mm
The threshold value for a is 5mm.
The above data collected for wheel guade clearenaces from section Bb at 30 degrees and Cc at 50 degree from the vertical axis has passed the European standards.
Results
By analysing overall data we conclude that, this car does not pass the european standards.
