Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

OBJECTIVE:

To study the standard and regulations for fender design of wheel arch and analyse the data which is given in the question whether the wheel arc area will pass the standards or not.

There are various standard which normally varies by region and their road structure like japanese,U.S AND europe,here we take european standard.

INTRODUCTION TO FENDER:

• Fender is a part of a car which is used to protect the sides of the engine compartment.
• The fender is situated above the wheel of the car so that it can protect the side parts of the car and other vehicle which is moving nearby since the chips and debris thrown from the wheel in movement could cause damage.
• The fender also reduces the pedestrian injury when there is a pedestrian vehicle collision and prevent throwing up of debris to nearby vehicles.
• Usually the front fender is designed seperately,the rear fender come along with the body structure.
• Pedestrian safety is also considered while designing wheel arch in fender since the debris in wheel should'nt hit them in the motion of the car.

TYPES OF FENDER:

Full-bumper type: This is a conventional type used in fender .This fender covers the wheel almost eighty percent which is shown in the image.

Half-bumper type:This type of bumper helps in reducing the weight of fender at the same time it improves the safety of pedestrian moving.This type is shown in the above image in the introduction part.

FENDER DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS:

1. Drip Area
2. Wheel arch
3. Baffle and ORVM mount area
4. frontal crash regulation and requirements.

STANDARDS FOR DESIGNING FRONT FENDER:

European standard for wheel arch: According to european standard clearance length for the wheel arch will be 10mm.

wheel CTR is wheel center.SA,SB,SC,SD,SE are the points on the wheel from where it is projected to the whhel arch to measure the distance.

CONCLUSION:

The wheel arch distance is measured and checked whether it will meet the european standard.The result shows that the car will not pass the standard since the only SB region meets the requirements.

The model will be sent to the styling team for reconsidering the wheel arch on the stylised fender body.
