Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
AIM
To calculate the wheel arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standards.
OBJECTIVES
- To study about the different wheel arch gap standards.
- Draw the lines at required angle and points for the European standards.
- Measure the distance at each angles and mention given model is pass or fail.
FENDER
Fender is the prt of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well. Its primry purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by rotating tire. Fenders are typicaally rigid nd can be damaged by contct with the road surface.
WHEEL ARCH
It is a curved part of the fender positioned right above the wheel. The wheel arch is designed such that it protects both the pedestrian and car cabin from mud, water rocks and other road spray. Different countries have different wheel arch design hs to comply with them to be deemed usable in tht country.

FENDER WHEEL ARCH REGULATIONS
JAPAN REGULATION
It says we need to draw two line with wheel centre point and refferrence to vertical line on the wheel with 30 degree on the lefft and 50 degree on the right. Projecting the points to the wheel arch the points must be 5mm or above.

EUROPEAN REGULATION
As like Japan it also saays to draw two line with wheel centre point and reference to vertical line on the wheel with 30 degree on the left and 50 degree on the right. Projecting the ponts to the wheel arch the points must be 10mm or above. Additionlly we will have to take a 150mm point from the zero or horizontal line of the wheel and also inn between the 150mm point and the 50 degree point will also take a midpoint. Along with this we need to measure "a" the distance between the outer most layer and the SB,SC should be above 5mm.

USA REGULATION
Here in USA we need to take points for every 10 degree from -20 degree of the right side to 0 degree of the wheel and all must be 5mm or above.

WHEEL ARCH AREA CALCULATION - EUROPEAN STANDARD
For calculation of wheelarch, we have to create a sketch on the outer most face of the wheel and follow the procedure as well.
We have to open the given part file in NX software which contains fender and wheel parts. So we need to check whether the parts meets the European standards.
We need to create datum plane on the outer most face of the wheel. After creating datum plane,we sketch the lines in that plane according to reference dimensions given as per the European standards.

Then measure the distance of the required parameters "L" and "a" long all the lines.

TABULATION
| SECTION | L (>10mm) | RESULT | a (>5mm) | RESULT |
| SA | 9.9488 | FAIL | 31.5464 | PASS |
| SB | 10 | PASS | 48.6263 | PASS |
| SC | 0.1137 | FAIL | 43.3597 | PASS |
| SD | 2.8533 | FAIL | 52.5332 | PASS |
| SE | 5.9190 | FAIL | 52.5332 | PASS |
CONCLUSION
From the above results we can conclude that the fender does not pass the European regulations as the minimum clearance between the wheel arch to the outer most face of the wheel.
