Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

aim:

To study the given wheel arch of the fender meets the European Standards

Abstract:

The fender is the part that surrounds the wheel. The main function of the fender is to prevent the engine components from mud dust rocks and fluids.

Fig 1. Front Fender of an automobile

The two types of the fender. There are

  1. full bumper type

    2. half bumper type

The main parameter is the various considerations required to design a fender out of all the wheel arch area. In the vehicle wheel arch is the semicircular part placed above the wheel While designing the fender we must consider the wheel arch of the fender meets the standards.

Wheel arch area considerations in a fender design

  1. Different of the front wheel arch area standards.
    1. Japanese Standards
    2. European Standards
    3. American Standards
  1. Checking whether the front fender wheel arch meets the above standards.
  2. Study and verify the given part considering the European Standards.
  1.  Different of the front wheel arch area standards

Different countries follow different regulations based on the country road conditions, government rules, and various other factors.in this case, the wheel arch area calculation will be studied and verified with the three different standards. The main purpose of the wheel arch area regulation is to see the front fender and tire from the top, that the tire must be inside the fender by a certain distance

  1. Japanese Standards

Measure clearance L of the tire, hub, cap, and fender in three different positions within area K and produce a clearance check chart to validation purpose. Clearance should be greater than 5mm in all three different positions (i.e., at A, B, and C from fender curvature). The value of 'a' should be more than 5 mm at line 30 degrees forward and 50 degrees backward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

  1. European Standards

Measure Clearance L at the different sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE and produce CL check chart to validate purpose.in the above all five sections, the Clearance L value must be greater than 10 mm to satisfy the European regulations. The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at line 30 degrees forward and 50 degrees backward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

  1. American Standards

Measure clearance all different positions from -100 degrees to 100 degrees and form the clearance check table. All values should be greater than 5 mm to satisfy the American Standards. The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at line 30 degrees forward and 50 degrees backward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

  1. Examining the given part considering the European Standards

We will examine the given fender design as per the European standards mentioned below

constructing the points of measurements for the wheel arch area.

The different clearance values

Clearance for SA = 9.9490mm

Clearance for SB = 10mm

Clearance for SC = -0.113949mm

Clearance for SD = -2.8523mm

Clearance for SE = -5.9191mm

  1. Checking whether the front fender wheel arch meets required the standards

        position

Observed clearance value(mm)

Required clearance value(mm)

Passes the requirement?

    SA

                 9.9490

          10

          NO

    SB

                 10

          10

          PASS

    SC

                -0.113949

          10

          NO

    SD

               -2.8523

          10

          NO

    SE

               -5.9191

          10

          NO

Comparing the above-observations values with the standard values

Conclusion:

the above table, the positions SA, SC, SD, and SE clearance is less than the 10mm minimum requirement for the European standards, this means the given fender wheel arch area doesn’t pass the European Regulations.
