Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
To calculate the wheel arch gap at required points check whether the car passes the European standard.
Objective
- Study about the different wheel arch gap standards.
- Draw the lines at the required angle and points for the European standard.
- Measure the distance at each angles and mention given model is pass or fail.
Theory:
Fender:
Fender is a part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

The main purpose of fenders on cars is that they shield the wheels and they protect the passenger the pedestrians and the other vehicles from stones, mud, liquid and other debris that can fly in the air because of the speeding rotating wheels while the car is running.
Wheel Arch:
It is a curved part of the fender positioned right above the wheel. The wheel Arch is designed such that it protects both the pedestrian and car from mud, water rocks and other road spray. Different countries have different wheel arch regulations in place, and the wheel arch design has to comply with them to be deemed usable in that country.
For avoiding design alterations of the same vehicle to meet the different regulations parameters are taken into consideration for design purpose.

Fender wheel Arch Regulations,
Japan Regulations:

It says we need to draw two line with wheel center point and reference to vertical line on the wheel with 30o on the left and 50o on the right. Projecting the points to the wheel arch the points must be 5mm or above.
European Regulations:

As like Japan it also says to draw two line with wheel centre point and reference to vertical line on the wheel with 30o on the left and 50o on the right. Projecting the points to the wheel arch the points must be 10mm or above. And additionally we will have to take a 150mm point from the zero or horizontal line of the wheel and also in between the 150mm point and the 50o point we will also take a midpoint. Along with this we need to measure “a” the distance between the outer most layer and the SB, SC should be above 5mm.
USA Regulations:

Here in USA we need to take points for every 10o from -20o of the right side to 0 of the wheel and all must be 5mm or above.
Here in this report we have checked a fender for European regulation.
We have drawn the points as per the requirements and here are the distance.

Result:
As per the evaluation we come to know this wheel arch does not pass the European regulation requirement. Only L value of SB is PASS. Other four points are less than the required value. So we need to change the design.
