Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

WHEEL ARCH CHALLENGE

Aim :

To Calculate the Wheel Arch Area by given fender and Wheel Model Design and Prove whether the car will pass by using European standards or Not.

Introduction :

  • The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle.
  • Designing of wheel arch is the clearance between wheel and fender during the vehicle bump conditions.
  • During Rotating Wheels can throw the mudrocks, dirt or water so the fender can prevent the car.
  • Wheel arch is also known as Wheel well.Wheel arch is a part of the fender and Curvature in shape.
  • While designing the Wheel arch it should be in mind that the wheel should be inside the fender.
  • As we see the car from the front of the wheel is outside the fender, then it causes a lot of damage to pedestrians and also to the car so the wheel should be under the fender.

BEFORE GOING TO EUROPEAN REQUIREMENTS FIRST WE WILL LOOK IN TO DIFFRENT WHEEL ARCH FENDER REGULATIONS:--

  • JAPAN REGULATION REQIREMENTS.
  • USA REGULATIONS REQUIREMENTS.
  • EUROPEAN REGULATION REQUIREMENTS.

1.JAPAN REGULATION REQIREMENTS:--

As per Japanese regulation, the clearance between tyre and fender must be greater than 5mm The projected points to be measured are at an angle 30° forward & 50° rearward respectively.

As per Japanese regulation, the clearance between tyre and fender must be greater than 5mm The projected points to be measured are at an angle 30° forward & 50° rearward respectively. Thus at point c, the clearance value is in negative value which denoted interference and hence the modifications are to be carried out.

2.USA REGULATIONS REQUIREMENTS:--

As per US regulation, the clearance between tyre and fender must be greater than 5mm. The projected points to be measured are at an angle 0° forward to 100° respectively. Thus each position is divided into 10°. Thus the projected distances are measured at around 21 different points.

3.EUROPEAN REGULATION REQUIREMENTS:--

As per European regulation, the clearance value between fender and tyre profile must be greater than 10mm. The value is measured in projected point at an angle 30° forward and 50° rearward respectively. The measurement took in five different positions of the tyre at point a & b the clearance is acceptable. But at point c, d & e there is a negative sign which denoted the interference of wheel arch with a tyre.

Procedure for Calculation :

  • As per given requirements, Clearance between wheel and Fender is 'L' clearance value should be greater than 10mm.
  • Wheel Gaurd Value is 'A' it was the clearance between wheel arch and wheel distance the value more than 5mm.
  • Measure clearance L at Sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE as per given chart value.
  • At a line of SA angle is 90° and the SA to SB is 30° Forward and SA to SC is 50° Rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
  • Center Axis line taken by the value is 150mm for SE.
  • And the SC to SE midpoint is SD line taken.

Sketch View :

  • The value of clearance at ‘SA’ at the centre & ‘SB’, ‘SC’ should be more than 10mm at line 30* forward and 50* reward from the central
vertical axis of the wheel. Here we have made another 2 points to be measured that will be SD & SE is also more than 10mm

Calculation:

1. Value For 'L' :

SA value is 9.9490 mm

SB value is 10.0000 mm

SC value is 0.11394 mm

SD value is -2.8875 mm

SE value is -5.9973 mm

SB:

Measurement of point SA SB SC SD SE
Required length 10 10 10 10 10
Actual length 9.9490 10 0.11394 -2.8875 -5.9973
Remark FAIL PASS FAIL FAIL FAIL

Calculation:

2. Value for 'A' :

SA angle of 90° measure value is 27.8310 mm

SB angle distance from SA to SB is 30° angle and the measure value of distance is 44.7577 mm

SC angle distance form SA to SC is 50° angle and the measure value of distance is 38.3599 mm

Measurement of point SA SB SC
Required length 10 10 10
Actual length 27.8310 44.7577 38.3599
Remark PASS PASS PASS

Result :

As per the requirement SA, SB, SC is passed.

Conclusion :

Hence, we declare that European standard method this fender design didn't passed by given requirements and need to modifiy the length(L) requirements of the fender design.
