Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Aim:- To Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.
Given part:-

Wheel arch:-
The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender. The wheel arch is designed considering all possible motions the tire undergoes while the vehicle is in motion. The car has big, high-definition headlights that extend to the wheel arch.
Using the Europian Standards Discussed:-

Wheel Arc Verification Using European Standards:-
- The important parameter which is considered in the designing of wheel arch or wheel is the clearance between wheel and fender during the vehicle bump conditions.
- Requirements have been proposed by vehicle and road safety community to the minimum requirement of wheel arc distance
from the wheel for safety.
Rules –
1. Measure of CL L is done on sections SA, SB , SC, SD, SE.
2. At all sections the value of CL L should be greater that 10mm.
3. Wheel guard requirement -: The value of a shall be more that 5mm at 30 Deg forward and 50 Deg rearward from the central axis of wheel.
The below fig shown the sketch is drawn on the wheel face as per the European Standards-

Calculation of the clearence value"L" as following:-
1) The measured "L" value between the point intersecting fender arch at 30degree and point lying on line SB=10.0000 mm.

2) The measured "L" value between the point intersecting fender arch at 90 degree and point lying on line SA= 9.9490 mm.

3) The measured "L" value between the point intersecting fender arch at 50 degree and point lying on line SC= 0.1139 mm.

4) The measured "L" value between the point intersecting fender arch and point lying on line SD= -2.8621 mm. (the point is lying outside the fender arch).

5) The measured "L" value between the point intersecting fender arch at 150mm from the centreline and point lying on line SE=-5.9973 mm.(the point is lying outside the fender arch).

| Sr NO. | Section | Clearance "L" in mm |
Result |
| 1 | SB | 10mm | PASS |
| 2 | SA | 9.9490mm | FAIL |
| 3 | SC | 0.1139mm | FAIL |
| 4 | SD | -2.8621mm | FAIL |
| 5 | SE | -5.9973mm | FAIL |
Conclusion:-
This fender does not pass the europian standard as comparing the clearence values of SA, SB, SD, SE to the europian standards. The wheel's surface is coming out of the fender arch which is not acceptable.
