Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Fender Design - Wheel Arch

The fender is a crucial part of a car's exterior because it encloses the wheel arch that holds the wheels in place. Properly fitting within the fender's boundaries prevents the wheels from projecting abrasive materials into the air, which could harm the car's exterior or even pedestrians. Additionally, the fender contains a plastic baffle that shields the vehicle from debris flung by the wheel.

Aim: To calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

European Standards Requirement:

  1. In sketch, use project 3d elements to project the edge of the fender and wheel.
  2. Create a point in the centre of the wheel.
  3. From that point, make two construction lines vertically and horizontally.
  4. Then with the vertical line make 5 lines where one is at 30*on the left side and one at 50* on the right side.
  5. Then from the horizontal line create a point on the projected fender edge at 150 mm and draw a line from the centre point.
  6. Draw another line in between the line at 50* and the line which is at 150 mm such that the new line is at the mid of both.
  7. Create a point on the intersection oh the lines with the fender and get out of the sketch workbench.

8. The outermost surface is extracted of both the wheel and the fender.

9. Project the points on the extracted surface.

10. Using constrain function, I measure the distance between the wheel extract the points.

From this I got the "Horizontal distance (L)" value.

Which are,

SB to wheel = 10 mm.

SA to wheel = 9.949 mm.

SC to wheel = 0.114 mm.

SD to wheel = 5.997 mm.

Since, as per European standards, L >=10 mm.

Table:

Fender to Wheel Distance (L) Result
SA 10 PASS
SB 9.949 FAIL
SC 0.114 FAIL
SD 5.997 FAIL

From this I got the "Vertical distance (a)" value.

Which are,

SB point to wheel = 43.641 mm.

SA point to wheel = 25.992 mm.

SC point to wheel = 38.36 mm.

Since, as per European standards, a >=5 mm.

Fender to Wheel Distance (a) Result
SA 43.641 PASS
SB 25.992 PASS
SC 38.36 PASS

Conclusion

Since, the fender doesn't pass the European standard requirements, therefore it is not fit for the European market.
