Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER DESIGN - WHEEL ARCH CALCULATION
Objective:
To calculate the clearance between wheel arch the wheel and check whether the clearance provided to the car as per the European standards.
What is wheel arch?
It is the semi circular arch situated just above the wheel on the fender, it is used to protect the pedestrians and the inner components of the car. which is place near the wheel from the projection of mud, dirt, small stones due to rolling of a wheel.

EUROPEAN STANDARDS:

Measure CL-L at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE and produce CL.
At all five sections the CL-L value should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the european regulations.
JAPANESE STANDARDS:

The clearance 'L' between the outer surface of the tire & fender in three different positions within area K must be greater than 5mm.The value of 'L' shall be more than 5mm at an angle of 30 degree forward and 50 degree backwards from the center vertical axis of the wheel.
UNITED STATES STANDARDS:

The clearance 'L' at all positions (every 10 degree) from -20 degree to 180 degree should be greater than 5mm.
Calculating the wheel arch by Euro standard:

Obtaining the value of clearance length L:
1. Measuring L at given wheel arch and fender at SB

2. Measuring L at given wheel arch and fender at SA

3. Measuring L at given wheel arch and fender at SC

4. Measuring L at given wheel arch and fender at SD

5. Measuring L at given wheel arch and fender at SE

Obtaining the clearance of wheel guard, it should be greater than 5mm.
1. The value at a line 30 degree forward from the center vertical axis is 44.75 mm

2. The value at a line 50 degree backward from the center vertical axis is 38.35 mm

Conclusion:
As per European standard the fender wheel arc is failed.
