Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER WHEEL ARC CALCULATION
AIM:
To calculate the distance between the fender and the wheel by using the European regulation.
INTRODUCTION
- The wheel arc is an arch shaped cavity in the body of the vehicle which houses the wheel.
- It has the very to important function it serves the main work as to prevent the pedestrians and other cars because the wheel is satiated in the body of the car.
- The second function is to prevent the inside of the car from mud, water, dust.
- While smooth loose objects like stones can stuck temporarily embedded in the ribs of the tire and when the tires comes into motion then the wheel goes upward And it moves forwards the stones which are stuck in to ribs are getting loose from the ribs of the tire this may hit the pedestrian or the cars which are near .
There are different types of the wheel arc regulation to every region in that we are going to take example from three like
- JAPAN REGULATION
- EUROPEAN REGULATION
- US REGULATION
So lets us see that in detail.,
JAPAN WHEEL ARC REGULATION:

Figure :1
- Measure the clearance of the “L” shown in the (figure :1) and measure in the two different position showed as (AREA K) produce clearance check chart to validate.
- The clearance must be greater than 5mm in between the area that is marked as “K”
- The wheel arc requirement the value should be more than 5mm at a line 30” forward and 50”rearward from the centeral vertical axis which is marked as “A”
EUROPEAN WHEEL ARC REGULATION:

(figure:2)
- It is same measuring technique that as used in Japan wheel arc regulation except it needs to be measured in 5 different areas as shown in the (figure:2) (SB,SA,SC,SD,SE)
- And the gap between the “L” should be 10mm at all the points to meet with the European regulation
US WHEEL ARC REGULATION

(figure:3)
- Even the US regulation used the same as the other two regulation but in US the measuring point is increased as shown in the (figure:3)
- All the values should be greater than 5mm in order to meet the US REGULATION
THEREFORE;
There are different types of regulation based on the different types of region. This analysis is done by using the EUROPEAN REGULATION.
An example model as been taken to measure the gap by using the European regulation.
(Fig:4)

As shown in the (fig:4) all the marked areas (A,B,C,D,E) dimensions are shown separately below.
(fig:4,A)

(fig:4,B)

(fig:4,C)

(fig:4,D)

(fig:4,E)

The clearance of the “L” was measured and found to be as follows
A=21.69mm
B=21.64mm
C=11.58mm
D=8.81mm
E=5.70mm
As shown the value of D&E are less than 10mm which is necessary to pass the European standards
Hence the front fender wheel arc does not pass the EUROPEAN STANDARD REGULATION.
SUGGESTION:
Need to improve the styling surface on the both areas which failed to meet the standards.
