Fender Design

FENDER

  • Fender is the us English term for the part of the automobile that frames the wheel well.
  • Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, dust, rocks, liquid and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tyre.
  • When the wheel is moving tyres pick up stones and hurl them in all the direction. Fenders are basically present to prevent any injuries to pedestrians and contains the motion of these particales.
  • More elaborate designs include fender skrits for enclosing the outside edge of the wheel well and stylized portion fenders for exposed fenders

TYPES OF FENDER :

  • FULL BUMPER TYPE.
  • HALF BUMPER TYPE.

Mostly we go with the half bumper type because the sheet metal is used to manufacture the full bumper type is the blank is really big and there is more wastage but in half bumper type by slightly increasing the blank size, we can produce two fenders at the same time and this is called as scrap management. MOUNTING AREAS OF FENDER:

There are five mounting points in the fender:

  • BODY
  • A-PILLAR
  • SILL
  • COWL
  • DRIP

DRIP AREA MOUNT.

This is the connection of the fender with the engine compartment this region is  mounted below the hood inner panel which need to flush inside when the hood is in the closed condition.

The drip area is either spot welded or bolted down by self-tapping screws.

Refer(fig:2)

                                            (fig:2)

A-PILLAR MOUNTIING

The A-pillar is the structural pillar that combines the body to the roof this makes the sides of the windshield rest the front fenders are fastened to the A-pillar to form a robust structure.

Refer(fig:3)

                                (fig:3)

SILL MOUNT AREA:

Sill is the pannel directly below the bottom of the door supporting the floor and may be used to combain the floor and the body. The bottom end of the fender is mounted on the sill body for reinforcment of the fender pannel thus the sill mounting position is designed with the holes and emboss. Refer(fig:4)

                                                      (fig:4)

BUMPER MOUNTING AREA

Bumper mounting area is used to fix the plastic bumper to the fender with the help of the fasteners.Refer(fig:5)

                          (fig:5)

BAFFLE MOUNT AREA:

Baffle mounting or mudguard are clip fit type of mounting on the inner side of the fender arc over the tyre. It protects the car engine compartment and pedestrians from causing the injuries from chip out debris on the road when the car in in the motion the are mounted on the fender by using the special type locking clips which are made up of plastic. Refer(fig:6)

(fig:6)

APPLIYING THE THICKNESS ON THE SURFACE:

The thickness of 0.75mm is inward on the final sewed surface of the fender to the sheet metal parameters.
