FENDER DESIGN
FENDER:
Fender is the part of an automobile, motor cycle or a vechile body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road sprayfrom being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.
Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.

Types of fenders
a. Based on location:
There are two types of fenders based on location: front quarter panels and rear quarter panels.
- Front fender or front quarter panels
Front fender panels are located on the sides of each front wheel. These panels typically cover the sides of the headlights to the hinge of the driver and passenger doors on the A-pillar. A car front fender runs vertically from the hood to the wheel well.

2.Rear fender or Rear quarter panels
Rear fender panels are located on the sides of each rear wheel. They extend from the edge of the rear doors on the C-pillar all the way towards the edge of the tail lights. Rear fenders also usually feature a fuel hole with a gas cap. These features can be found on either the driver or passenger rear panels, depending on the year and model of the vehicle.

b. based on material used
- Curved steel was predominantly used in the fabrication of fender panels when they were first introduced in the late 1800s.
- Today, automakers use non-ferrous sheet metals and other materials to avoid corrosion damage caused by exposure to water and the elements. You can find modern fenders made from steel, aluminum, thermoplastic, and fiberglass.
- mostly, all the exterior parts of the automobile are made of same material.
c. based on shape
- full bumper type
These type of fenders were mainly used in old cars.

- Half bumper type
mostly half bumper type is used in automobiles. It is basically related to scrap management. Half bumper type leads to less wastage of the blank.

Design parameters
Master section to create the Drip Area:-
Fender technically has 5 major mounting points, they are;
- Body mounting
- Sill mounting
- Cowl mounting
- A-pillar mounting
- Dri area mounting
Skin data
This is the surface provided by the styling team. Mountings for the fender are to be created.

Drip area:-
Drip area is the major mounting area of the fender.
the design of drip area is created according to the master section provided.
Darts are created on drip area to strengthen the part.

Sill mounting
This part is mounted to sill area of car i.e, bottom part of car body.

Bumper mounting
This part is mounted to the bumper of the car.since, the bumper mounting area is long dart is provided to strengthen the part.

A-pillar mounting
This part is mounted to the A-pillar of the car.

Baffle mounting
Baffle is the black rubber material which is used to restrict mud and water over the tires. The baffle is mounted to this part using pins.
