Fender Design Challenge

                                                            DESIGN OF BIW FRONT FENDER

Aim :

     To design a front fender as per OEM standards which has mounting points on Drip, Bumper, Sill, A-Pillar & Splash.

Objective :

• To design the front fender & analyse the mounting points As per OEM standards
• Design the Drip mounting with the given master section and also the consideration of cowl & Head  lamp housing.

Introduction :

       Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

       Sticky materials such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.

       Front fender panels are located on the sides of each front wheel. These panels typically cover the sides of the headlights to the hinge of the driver and passenger doors on the A-pillar. A car front fender runs vertically from the hood to the wheel well.

A-Surface for Fender,

Master section for Drip Mounting,

Design the Fender with the given A-Surface & master section. 

Fender Thickness = 0.75 MM

Design of fender :

      The designs are made as per the OEM design standards.

Fender Drip Mounting :

        

      For design the drip mounting of a fender we need to leave some space for the cowl part for attachment of 200 mm & Head lamp housing attachment for 150 mm.

 For every mounting hole there should be a clearance of 5mm radius for inserting the fasteners.

 The design which is made for drip mounting are as per the master section.

Fender Bumper Mounting :

        In the bumper mounting area the front bumper will be mounted.

Fender Sill Mounting :

       In the Sill mounting the emboss was created to mount the inner panel of sill with the fasteners.

Fender A-Pillar Mounting :

         In the A-Pillar mounting the emboss was created to mount the inner panel of A-Pillar with the fasteners.

 Fender Splash Mounting :

            In the splash mounting the hole was created to mount the plastic part called Baffle with the fasteners.

       Thus the design of a front fender as per OEM standards which has mounting points on Drip, Bumper, Sill, A-Pillar & Splash is completed sucessfully.
