REPORT- FRONT FENDER DESIGN

  1. OBJECTIVE- Fender design in NX-CAD.

  2. INTRODUCTION- Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

  3. TYPES OF FENDER-
    1. Placed-
      1. Front
      2. back

    2. Size-
      1. Full bumper type Fender
      2. Half bumper type Fender

Now a days the half bumper type of fender is used the most because in the full bumper type of fender a lots of meterial is used.

For the more material used the performance of the car is dicreased. But using the half bumper type is very useful for the performance and the less wastege is occured.

  4. MOUNTING REGIONS-
    1. There are five main mountings on the fender. Those are-
      • drip mounting
      • A-pillar mounting
      • Bumper mounting
      • Baffel mounting
      • Sill mounting

  5. DESIGN METHODOLOGY-
    1. DRIP MOUNTING-
      1. Drip is an important mounting in a car. It is in the engine compartment, which helps to tight the fender with the engine compartment area.
      2. For the drip mounting flange we have to give at least 200mm gap from the A-pillar side edge for the wiper motor assembly and the instrument panel assembly.
      3. And we have to give 150 mm from the fron/bumper side edge for mounting of headlamp.
      4. For the drip design we have to consider min. 10mm gap between the fender and the engine.
      5. I did the design of fender (in the below image is shown), I gave 2 embosses and holes for the fasteners fitting and I gave 3 darts for giving strength to the drip.

    2. SILL MOUNTING-Sill is used to fasten the fender with the base part, feder lower and the body together. I designed the sill mounted area with a single emboss and two holes, emboss is for giving the strength and the holes are used to fasten. M5 fastener is used to fasten the fender.

    3. A-PILLAR MOUNTING-A-pillar is the first pillar of a car which is used to join the roof with the body and this makes the side of windshield rests. Front fenders are fastened to the A-pillar to form a robust structure.
    4. BUMPER MOUNTING-Boumper mounting is used to fasten the fender with the frontal plastic part/bumper. I designed the bumper mounting with two embosses and two darts. Darts are used to give strength to the flange.

    5. BAFFLE MOUNTING-Baffel or mudgaurd is used to gaurd the fender and the lower side from the mud. Baffel mounting is used to combine or fasten the fender with the baffel. I used only holes for better fastening and as the flages are not so big I didn't use embosses or other strengthen feature.
