Designing of Front Fender and Mounting areas
Objective
Designing of Fender and Mounting areas such as Dripping area ,Cowl mount,Sill mount ,Bumper mount ,A - pillar mount and Splash Cover mount as per the engineering design standards .

Intoduction

Fender is the American term for the part of an automobile body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.
Types of Fender
Full front Fender - It that cover the tire, the fender forms the wheel well surrounding the tire, and is not directly visible from above the car body. This type of fender increases the weight and scrap and reduces mielage .
Half Front Fender - It main function is to minimise the weight and increase mileage .
Functions of Fender -
· Car fenders limit the exposure of your car’s body and engine to external elements that are harmful.
· Fenders flares are attached to ensure that both the body and engine have minimal contact with corrosive elements.
· Car fenders provide safety to the driver and the passengers at the time of accidents or collisions. They are manufactured in a way to provide bend during front and side collisions.
· Car fenders are designed to avoid wind resistance and make your car more aerodynamic.
· Car fenders enhance the overall look of your car. Fender flares are available in distinctive designs in the market. Mostly you find universal fender flares, but you can get customized cars fenders to fit your car wheels.
Design Procedure of Fender and Mounting areas
Engineering Standard Data:-
- During desinging of front fender the angle gap b/w Hood and fender is 3 degree minimum.
- The fender part is mount to car body by fastners
- Proving emboss to add strength.
- While desing Drip area Providing the 150mm gap for head light housing from front of fender and also providing enough clearence of abount 300 or less
from back of fender for easy installation of component in engine bay. - Provinding the relife at sharp edges using command like curve in surface.

Effect of Principal axis direction and shear centre position
- In the vehicle bending case, in which the loads are symmetrical, any tendency for twist or lateral deflection of the inner fenders can be balanced by tension or compression in these members. In the pure vehicle torsion case, the loads, and hence the distortions of the fender assemblies, are anti-symmetric so that more than simple tension or compression is needed in these cross-rails. A horizontalsimple structural surface is required between the rails to resist the lateral deflection by its shear stiffness. The inner fender side rails and the added frontal cross-rails can form part of this if the corner joints are sufficiently stiff.
- An alternative is to include diagonal ‘strut brace’ tubular members from the tops of the suspension towers to an anchor point on the vehicle centreline at the parcel shelf/bulkhead junction.
