Fender Design Challenge
Aim: To design fender drip area, Sill mount area, body mount area, A- pillar mount region and Bumper mount region.
Given:
Introduction: In a typical passenger car-to-pedestrian collision, it is noted that the pedestrian’s body rotates after the initial contact with the hood leading edge. Consequently, the head often crashes into a stiff part of the car body, resulting in serious or life-threatening head injuries. Therefore, to reduce pedestrian fatalities, it is important to improve vehicle structures so as to mitigate head injuries.
Front fenders are one example of such stiff body parts with small impact energy absorption capability.
Uses of Car Fenders:
- Car fenders limit the exposure of your car’s body and engine to external elements that are harmful.
- Fenders flares are attached to ensure that both the body and engine have minimal contact with corrosive elements.
- Car fenders provide safety to the driver and the passengers at the time of accidents or collisions. They are manufactured in a way to provide bend during front and side collisions.
- Car fenders are designed to avoid wind resistance and make your car more aerodynamic.
- Car fenders enhance the overall look of your car. Fender flares are available in distinctive designs in the market. Mostly you find universal fender flares, but you can get customized cars fenders to fit your car wheels.
Drip Area: This region is mounted below the hood inner panel which needs to be in flush when the hood is in closed condition and also there should be very less gaps. The drip area is either spot welded or in some cases bolted down via self-tapping screws.
Bumper Mount Area: A Mounting area of the fender to bumper region. Bumpers are mostly made of plastic which covers the bottom front and back part of the car. It protect the car at the time of collisions.
A Pillar Mount: This is mounted to the A pillar frame of the chasis so that it is attached to the body of the car.
Sill Mount:
