Fender Design Challenge
FENDER DESIGN:
Fender is the part of an automobile frames a wheel well (the fender underside).
Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.
Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground.
These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects.
For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.
MOUNTING AREAS:
- A Pillar Mounting Area
- Drip Mounting Area
- Bumper Mounting Area
- Body Mounting Area
- Sill Mounting Area
A PILLAR- It is the vertical support of the car window, and it is joined with the fender through A pillar Mounting Area.
DRIP AREA - Through the drip mounting area the engine compartment and the fender are joined.
BUMPER-It is a structure attached to or integrated with the front and rear ends of a vehicle, to absorb impact in a minor collision, ideally minimizing repair costs. And , it is joined with the fender through bumper Mounting Area.
BODY MOUNTING AREA - Baffle is attached with the fender through this area.
SILL MOUNTING AREA- A sill plate is essentially in place to protect the frame of the car from wear, provide traction and of course as a decorative element. It is connected with the fender through sill mounting area.
TYPES
There are two types of Fender
- Full Bumper type.
- Half Bumper type.
The half bumper type is created from the full bumper type by reducing the unwanted areas.
Now a days we are using the half bumper type.
By reducing the weight the performance of the car increases.
DESIGN METHODOLOGY
A PILLAR MOUNTING AREA:
We are provided with fender skin .
First we have to work on A pillar Mounting area.
Flanges are created at respective areas.

Embosses are created on the flange to increase the strength of the flange.
There should be a minimum clearance of 5-8 mm between different features(Blend, Emboss,Holes).

DRIP MOUNT AREA:
Here we have to create flanges with respect to the master section.

similarly trim the sheet as the previous one and create flanges on it.
Blends are created to join the surfaces.
Dart and emboss are created to improve the strength.

BUMPER MOUNTING AREA:
Trim the sheet and create the flanges .

Create emboss and holes , holes are created for the assembly.

BODY MOUNTING AREA:
In this we have to mount the baffle , so we have to create holes for assembly.

SILL MOUNTING AREA:
In the sill mounting area extend the sheet.
Create emboss and holes on it.

Thicken the part to about 0.75 mm.
