Fender Design

Report on Fender Design:

1. Introduction to Fender Design

Fenders are critical components in automotive design, mainly installed over the wheels to prevent mud, rocks, and debris from being projected onto the vehicle and other vehicles. They play a significant role in vehicle aesthetics and aerodynamics, providing a seamless look to the wheel area while also enhancing vehicle safety. Fenders are usually located on both the front and rear sides of the vehicle, with front fenders typically being separate components, while rear fenders are sometimes integrated with the quarter panel.

2. Types of Fender Mounts

Fender mounting methods vary depending on the vehicle type, design, and manufacturer preferences. Here are common types of fender mounts:

  • Body Side Mounting: Most common method where the fender is attached directly to the car body using bolts or clips. This method is strong and supports easy removal and reinstallation.
  • Wheel Well Mounting: These mounts are located along the inner edge of the fender, closest to the wheel well. This method provides a sturdy fit and can reduce vibrations from road contact.
  • Sill Mounting Area: The sill mounting area on the front fender is a specific mounting location that connects the lower edge of the fender to the vehicle’s sill panel or rocker panel (the horizontal panel running along the side of the vehicle between the wheel wells). This mounting point is essential in securing the front fender to the car body, providing stability, structural support, and alignment.
  • Front-end Mounting: This mounting is commonly used for front fenders, where mounts are positioned at the front end of the fender to connect with the vehicle’s front-end structure, usually near the bumper.
  • Drip Area Mounting: These mounting is used for Engine compartment side, there has lot of design Constraint to be followed.
The drip area in fender design refers to the portion of the fender where a mounting flange (known as the drip flange) is created to attach the fender to the vehicle body, particularly on the engine compartment side. This area is critical for securing the fender and providing a path for water to flow away, ensuring the vehicle's structural integrity and functionality. Below is an explanation of its design theory and importance.
