Fender Design

AIM: To design a front fender of a car by following the given master section as per the design considerations of OEM.

FENDER :-

It is an aesthetic component/part of a car that frames the wheels. Prevention of sand, mud particles, and other road contaminants from being thrown into the engine compartment and also to the pedestrians by the rotating tires are the main purpose served by the fenders.

The front fenders are separate components whereas the rear fenders are integrated with the body sides.

Types of Fender:

Full front fender:

If the fender covers the tire, the wheel well surrounding the tire, and it is not directly visible from above the car body. It increases the weight and scrap of the component.

Half front fender:

It reduces the weight and scrap. It creates only half of what the full front fender does and the other part is created with the bumper part.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

The front fender has basically five mounting positions with respect to the other components. The mounting positions are as follows:

  1. Drip Area Mounting.
  2. A-Pillar Mounting.
  3. Sill Mounting.
  4. Bumper Mounting.
  5. Baffle Mounting.

1) DRIP AREA MOUNTING:-

  • The drip area is the most important mounting in a fender because it carries maximum weight of the fender.
  • It is the point where the fender has to be attached to the engine compartment.
  • The length of the drip area depends on the length of the fender.
  • The drip area must be 150 mm away from the bumber mounting and 200 mm away from the A-Pillar mounting as shown below.

2) A-PILLAR MOUNTING AREA:-

The A -pillar is the structural pillar that combines the body to the roof. This makes the sides of the wind-shield rest. Front of the fenders are fastened to the A -pillar to form a robust structure.

3) SILL MOUNTING:-

Sill mounting is created on the bottom portion of the fender for attaching to the sill.

4) BUMPER MOUNTING:-

Bumper mounting area is used to fix the plastic bumper to the fender with the help of the fasteners

5) BAFFLE MOUNTING:-

Baffle mounting or mudguard are clip fit type of mounting on the inner side of the fender arch over the tyre . It protects the car engine compartment and pedestrians from causing injuries from chip out debris on the road when the car is in motion. They are mounted on the fender using a special type of locking clips which are made up of plastics .
