Fender Design

                                                                       FENDER DESIGN

AIM:

To design the Sill, Bumper, Baffle and A-pillar mount area of the car fender from the given A fender surface by following the engineering standards.

FENDER:

Fender is one of the BIW part of a vechicle. Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones can become temporarily embedded in the thread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle. This problem is prevented by the fender. In a vechicle there are both rear and front fenders. The Front fender is a seperate part which is mounted to the frame seperately whereas the rear fender is combined to the body of the vechicle.

In Front fender there are two types they are,

  • Full Bumper type
  • Half Bumper type.

FULL AND HALF BUMPER TYPE FENDERS:

FULL BUMPER TYPE FENDERS  were used in earlier days in the automobile. This type results in increase in weight of the part, which also causes major rejection of materials during it's process of manufacturing.

HALF BUMPER TYPE FENDERS are modern day design of fender in automobile. This type of fender gives good look to the vechicle as well as reduces the weight of the vechicle. The manufacturing process of the half bumper type fender results in reduction of rejection rate and minimizes the operations while manufacturing.

MASTER SECTION:

The Given master section to create drip area is:

 DESIGN OF FENDER:

The front fender has five mounting positions with respect to the other components. The mounting positions are as follows:

  • Drip Area Mounting.
  • A-Pillar Mounting.
  • Sill Mounting.
  • Bumper Mounting.
  • Baffle Mounting.

DRIP AREA MOUNTING:

The following Design requirements are used to design the drip area:

  • Drip Area should 150 mm from the front side and 200 from the mirrior side.
  • From the master section we have optimize values for draft, drawing and assembly point of view. such as Distance from engine comportment is 10mm, Height of fender etc....

  • Drip Area is the one where the fender is mounted to engine housing by Screws, rivets or Bolts, Some time we can see the bracket in BIW engine housing and fender. The depth of the drip area is maintained at less than 60mm so as to avoid the spring-back effect. Ribs are provided at the fender drip area to increase strength in that area.

A-PILLAR MOUNTING:

  • In the A-pillar region of the Fender design, A-pillar area is located at the top part of the fender.
  • We have to make an approximate surface for placing the mounting holes.

SILL MOUNTING:

  • The sill area in fender design is used to connect the floor of the vehicle body to the fender.
  • It is designed in such a way to make the fender in compact with the vehicle.
  • The mounting holes are to be placed in such a way it is according to the dimensions.

BUMPER MOUNTING:

  • The Bumper area mounting in fender design is designed to connect or assemble the bumper of the vehicle to the fender.
  • It should be designed in such a way to avoid noise and vibrations while running the vehicle.

 BAFFLE MOUNTING:

  • Baffles are located at the wheel arch area of the fender.
  • Baffles are used to protect the vehicle from dust particles and mud guards are attached to it.
  • It is also used to protect the pederstians from the chips out debris of the car when in motion.

CONCLUSION:

Thus the Sill, Bumper, Baffle and A-pillar mount area of the car fender from the given A fender surface by following the engineering standards are designed.
