Fender Design
FENDER
A fender is the aesthetic component of the car body that keep mud, rocks, and other road debris from being thrown around by the tires. the fender is a housing for the wheels that keeps road debris contained. If there was nothing covering the wheels, all kinds of debris would be kicked up by the rotating tires.
This metal structure that extend between your front door and front bumper, providing necessary protection for your front wheels.during the design of fender several factord has to be considered.
Fenders are commonly manufactured by using stamping process in automotive industry. apart from fender a major part of BIW is also manufactured by using stamping process. In stamping, a device called a stamping press is used with a series of dies to cut and form metal into various shapes.

TYPES OF FENDER
- FULL BUMPER TYPE
- HALF BUMPER TYPE
HALF BUMPER TYPE
These fenders are mainly used for serving the purpose of cost-cutting and reducing enough proportions of the steel wait resulting in a reduction of the weight of the vehicle slightly. They can be economically manufactured, i.e by slightly increasing the blank size, we can produce two fenders at a time.

FULL BUMPER TYPE
These types of fenders were used in earlier models of vehicles. They contribute to the major increment of the steel weight by just covering the front headlights with respect to the bumper region. The problem associated with this kind of fender is there is a lot of wastage in the blank and every inch of a material is a cost to the industry.

DESIGN CONSIDERATION OF FENDER
Drip mounting
of the front fender. this is the mounting where fender is attached to the engine compartment. the major design considerations of the drip area are distance from the headlamp housing and distance from the wiper equipment area. there must be 150 mm required between front area of fender and front side of drip mouting to accomadate the head lamp housing and 300mm or less is required between rear side of fender to the rear side of drip mount to accomadate the wiper equipment. the length of drip mount is depend on the length of fender.

A PILLAR MOUNTING
This mounting is designed to attach the fender with A pillar. enough clearance should provided to accomadate the wiper motor.

SILL MOUNTING
This is the lower portion amoung the fender mountings. this mounting is attaching to the sill area.

BUMPER MOUNTING
This mounting is attached to the front bumper.

BAFFLE MOUNTING
This mounting is used to attach a plastic component called baffle or fender protector.

During desinging of front fender the angle gap b/w Hood and fender is 3 degree minimum. The fender part is mount to car body by fastners Proving emboss to add strength. While desing Drip area Providing the 150mm gap for head light housing from front of fender and also providing enough clearence of abount 200 or less
from back of fender for easy installation of component in engine bay.
The mounting areas are designed as per the requirement and considered all the factor for crash analysis emboss and ribs are provided to strengthen the component and provide stiffness. The thickness of 0.75 mm is provided to the component .
