Design of backdoor
BACK DOOR/TAILGATE DESIGN
Aim:
To design car back door from given styling surface data under given design rules and regulations.
Car Back Door and Components:
The back door is a hinged door/tailgate at the rear of the vehicle. It may be used for loading and unloading cargo, or to get passengers in and out, in case there are seats present at the rear. The back door comprises of certain components which is,
- Outer panel
- Inner panel and
- Hinge reinforcements
- Gas stay reinforcements
- Wiper mount reinforcement
- Stricker reinforcement
Design consideration of Tailgate:
We are design the tailgate of a car, it should be in some design consideration. there are,
- Rear visibility critiria
- Boot area
- And then considering the load impact on the rear side of the car.
- It must be passed in all load test. such as tensile test, torsion test, Abuse test, Dent test, Endurance test and Assembly load case.
- By adding the reinforcement, it helps to improve strength of the back door.
- Hinges must be align in proper axis for the trajectory motion to open and close the door smothly.
Types of back door/ Tailgate:
- Top mounted type
- Bottom mounted type
Top mounted type:
The top mounted type of back door is mostly used in modern cars. It is used in a station wagon, pickup trunk and some of the spot utility vehicles. These top mounted tailgates provide greater rear visibility compared to side mounted. And it supported by the gas stay.

Side mounted type:
The side mount back door is used in the van type MPVs, SUVs, PICKUP TRUCK vehicles. These doors are generally smaller in size and can be easily accessed. It access to carry long and large size things as well.

Bottom mounted type:
The Bottom mounted type back door is used in the pickup trucks and luxury cars. these type of cars taken by travel peoples going for trip.

Design Methodelogy and Components:
Now we are discuse about the back door design methodelogy with their components. It is already mention in above.
Outer panel:
The outer panel is getting from the stylish team and it also similar to BIW component. The Outer panel also has the provisions for the tail lamp, rear fog lamp and also has the provision for lisence plate mountings.

Inner panel:
The inner Panel is a component which is used for strengthening the door and it is one of the most important components on which all accessories are mounted like hinges, glass guide channel, mounted trim, latch etc..,

Hinge Reinforcement:
The Hinge reinforcement is to provide the axis of rotation for lutch and stricker position along with the trajectory motion. It is positioned in proper angle the back door open and close process is so smooth And also used to improve the inner panel strength.

Gas stay Reinforcement:
An angled or Diabolic emboss is provided for the gas stay mounts. The angle makes it easy to be machined and stamped. It is reniforcement with a thicker sheet.

Wiper motor Reniforcement:
A dedicated space near the window is left for wiper motor assembly. A cavity is placed in the middle of the panel for the necessary components in the assembly as well as other accessories.

Latch and strikere Reniforcement:
At the bottom of the latch and striker assembly. Generally a key operated or automatic remotely controllable locking mechanism is used to keep the door closed and open.

Draft Analysis:
Draft analysis is used to pre-analys the component is correctly designed for manufecturing consideration. A And it determine the conceptual vition of drawing angle of the tool side.

In this draft analy shown the inner panel design is 'OK' for in manufecturing side.
Conclusion:
The back door/tailgate is designed by using NX software along with the design concepts.
