Design of backdoor
Design of an automotive back door
Aim: To design the back door vehicle with the skin data provided.
Back Door:
The back door or boot of a car is the vehicle’s main storage or cargo compartment, often a hatch at the rear of the vehicle. Early designs included an exterior rack mounted on the rear of the vehicle to which it was possible to attach a real luggage trunk. Later designs integrated the storage area into the vehicle’s body and evolved to provide a streamlined appearance.

Type of working mechanism used for the back door
- Gas Stay System: They are versatile hydro-pneumatic lifting mechanisms that help raise, lower, and support heavy objects. Some cars incorporate multiple sets of gas springs into the design of their various hoods, panels, and compartments, but by far the most common is in the boot lifting mechanisms.

BACK DOOR ASSEMBLY
- Back door outer upper panel
- Back door outer lower panel
- Back door inner panel
- Hinge reinforcement LH
- Hinge reinforcement RH
- Gas Stay Mount LH
- Gas Stay Mount RH
- Wiper Mounting
- Latch Reinforcement
Back Door Inner panel:
The inner panel consist of all the necessary embosses and the mounting positions of the gas stay, latch, and striker positions. At the time of impact, all the forces are directed at the hinges as shown.

Back Door outer panel:
The outer panel is hemmed along the edges of the inner panel creating corner reliefs wherever necessary

Hemming:
Hemming is done along the edges of the outer panel giving it strength and stability and thus providing corner reliefs whenever necessary so that the hemming doesn’t have a sharp bend along the bend radius thus creating bad surfaces.

Reinforcements:
The reinforcements were created to give strength and stability to the hinges, mounting, latch & striker positions, and wiper mounting.

Trajectory:
This method is done to understand the back door’s trajectory for the latch and striker positioning.
