Design and Assembly of Butterfly Valve by applying GD&T using CATIA-V5

BUTTERFLY VALVE :

The butterfly valve is fully open or closed when the disc is rotated a half turn.athe butterfly is a metal disc mounted on a stem.when the valve is fully open the disc is rotated half turn this allows unrestricted passage of the fluid. For stop the fluid flow the disc is roteted again half turn.athere are different types of butterfly valaves. In each butterfly valve have different pressures and different usage. After modelling various components of the butterfly valve geometric dimensioning and tolerancing is applied to each component and final assembly.

Applications of Butterfly valves

Butterfly valves can be used in many different fluid services and they perform well in large volume water applications and slurry applications. The following are some typical applications of Butterfly valves

  • Cooling water, air, gases, fire protection etc.
  • Slurry and similar services
  • Vacuum service
  • High-pressure and high-temperature water and steam services
  • Compressed Air or Gas Applications

Advantages of Butterfly Valves

  • Available in very large sizes.
  • Light in weight.
  • Quick operation requires less time to open or close.
  • Low pressure drops and high-pressure recovery.

Disadvantages of Butterfly Valves

  • Disc movement is unguided and affected by flow turbulence.
  • Cavitation and choked flow are two potential concerns.
  • Throttling service is limited to differential pressure.

COMPONENTS OF BUUTERFLY VALVE :

1.BODY:

Butterfly valves are fixed between twi pipelines using flange couplings.

2.SHAFT OR STEM:

The disc ,lever and nut are assembled to the shaft. In order for the disk to be held in the proper position.

3.DISC:

When we wnat to fully open or close the disc rotated a half(quarter)turn. The disc is mounted on the shaft. When the valve is opened the disc is turned it allows the passage of the fluid. When we want to close the disc is rotated and closed completely tjis cause the floe of fluid will be stops.

4.LEVER:

Lever is mounted on the shaft at top of the end of the shaft at out side of the body. The lever is used to controls the disc rotation.

5.TOP FLANGE OR RETAINER:

It is a some kind of washer fixed on the body of butterfly valve.

6.NUT:

It is fixed at top of the end of the shaft to keep the lever and top flange.

7.SCREW:

The screw is used to aseemble the top flnge and didc to the body and shaft.

ASSEMBLY:

After completing the modelling the various components of the valve all parts were assembled together using assembly workbench in catia v5 software.

CONCLUSION

The butterfly valve was successfully designed and deometric dimensioning and tolerancing applied to all components and assembly of the butterfly valve.
