Question 1 :-
Answer :-
AIM :- To Comment on the layout concerning earthquake resistance in the two horizontal directions with aspects of symmetry, redundancy, bi-directional stiffness and ductility.
1) Irregularity in terms of Symmetry :-
2) Irregularity in terms of Redundancy :-
3) Irregularity in terms of bi-directional stiffness :-
4) Irregularity in terms of Ductility :-
Question 2 :-
Answer :-
AIM :- To find the possible sources of irregularity in the building shown above and Explain how each irregularity should be dealt with.
1) Irregularity due to In-plane flexibility :-
- This behaviour of the building can be avoided by maintaining the floor plan aspect ratio within 3.
2) Irregularity in redundancy :-
- We can correct this irregularity by maintaining a uniform load distribution for all the vertical and horizontal members which will minimize the effect due to redundancy irregularity.
3) Irregularity due to Stiffness :-
- This effect can be minimized by avoiding such walls opening and providing at least partition walls wherever possible without affecting the aesthetics of the structure.
4) Soft storey effect due to mass irregularity :-
- This effect can be minimized by making the total mass of the lower floor approximately equal to the mass of the upper floor by using lightweight construction materials on lower floors.
5) Irregularity in Vertical geometry :-
- This irregularity can be minimized by keeping both the widths the same as far as possible with the consent of the Architect.
Answer 3 :-
Given :-
AIM :- To comment on the features of the structural design and of the layout of the building and the cause of the collapse of this building after the earthquake.
Comment on the features of the structural building plan :-
Probable cause of the collapse of this building after the earthquake :-
1) Mass Irregularity :-
2) Irregularity due to Stiffness provided by in-fill walls :-
3) Stiff Staircase connection throughout all levels of the Building :-
4) Framing Arrangements of the Building :-
5) Column Orientation of the Building :-
