Challenge 5
ASSIGNMENT-5
PREPARE AND ANALYSE A TRANSVERSE MODEL OF DECK SLAB OVER 4 I GIRDER
At first setup the unit from search bar, length as meter and load as kilonewton.
Create nodes: - Nodes are created through center of I girder and overhange portion.
Connect beam through nodes: - Beams are connected to joint the nodes.
Create supports: - Go to supports – create – pinned – add.
For assigning the supports, click over created support – select the 4 nodes where the support are placed – assign to selected nodes – assign.
Create properties: - Go to properties – define – rectangular – YD=depth of slab=0.240 meter & ZD=width of slab calculated in unit meter=1 meter – add – close.
For assigning click on properties – select the whole model – use cursor to assign – assign – close.

Create loads: -
Dead load-
Go to loading – load case details –[ number1 & loading type- dead & title- dead load]- add.
Edge load-
[ number2 & loading type- dead & title- edge load]- add.
Plinth load-
[ number3 & loading type- dead & title- plinth load]- add.
Live load-
[ number4 & loading type- dead & title- live load]- add.
Add the load under dead load-
Click on dead load – add – self weight – direction global Y & factor=-1 – add.
Assign the dead load-
Click on self weight – assign to view – assign.
Add the load & moments under edge load-
Click on edge load – add – nodal load – FY=24KN – add.
Add moment under edge load-
Click on edge load – add – nodal load – MZ=12KN/M – add- close.
Click on edge load – add – nodal load – MZ=-12KN/M – add- close.
Calculation of moments at edge-
Moment at right side= load * distance=24 * 0.5= 12 KN-M.
Moment at left side= load * distance=24 *- 0.5= -12 KN-M.
Note: Distance taken from edge of slab to c.g of parapet I,e 0.5.
Assigning the edge load-
Click on FY24KN/M – use cursor to assign- assign- click over both end nodes.
Assign the edge loads
Click on MZ 12KN-M- use cursor to assign – click over right end.
Click on MZ -12KN-M- use cursor to assign – click over left end.
Add load under plinth-
[Note: the plinth load distributed over deck slab at a distance of 0.5 meter from the centre of I girder at both side and make an angle of 45 degree from centre of I girder]
Load case-1
Click over plinth load- click add- member load- uniform force-
W1=-7 Kn/m and d1=0.75, d2=1.25, d3=0
Direction global Y -add.
Load case-2
Click over plinth load- click add- member load- uniform force-
W1=-7 Kn/m and d1=0, d2=0.5, d3=0
Direction global Y -add.
Load case-3
Click over plinth load- click add- member load- uniform force-
W1=-7 Kn/m and d1=1.5, d2=2, d3=0
Direction global Y -add.
Load case-4
Click over plinth load- click add- member load- uniform force-
W1=-7 Kn/m and d1=1.61, d2=2.11, d3=0
Direction global Y -add-close.
Assign the edge load-
Click on load case 1 – select the 1st beam – assign to selected beams – assign.
Click on load case 2 – select all beam except 1st one – assign to selected beams – assign.
Click on load case 3 – select only 2nd beam – assign to selected beams – assign.
Click on load case 4 – select the intermediate beam – assign to selected beams – assign.
Add load under live loads-
Load case-1
Click over live load- click add- member load- uniform force-
W1=-80 Kn/m and d1=0.75, d2=1.25, d3=0
Direction global Y -add-close.
Load case-2
Click over live load- click add- member load- uniform force-
W1=-80 Kn/m and d1=0, d2=0.5, d3=0
Direction global Y -add-close.
Load case-3
Click over live load- click add- member load- uniform force-
W1=-80 Kn/m and d1=1.5, d2=2, d3=0
Direction global Y -add-close.
Load case-4
Click over live load- click add- member load- uniform force-
W1=-80 Kn/m and d1=1.61, d2=2.11, d3=0
Direction global Y -add-close.
Assign the live load-
Click on load case 1 – select the 1st beam – assign to selected beams – assign.
Click on load case 2 – select all beam except 1st one – assign to selected beams – assign.
Click on load case 3 – select only 2nd beam – assign to selected beams – assign.
Click on load case 4 – select the intermediate beam – assign to selected beams – assign.
Add SLS load combination-
Case 1
Go to load case details- add- define- combinations-
Load no- 101, name- SLS case 1, default-1, type – normal – click on dead load – click on >- click over edge load and plinth load-change the default factor as 1.2- click on > - add
Case 2
Go to load case details- add- define- combinations-
Load no- 102, name- SLS case 2, default-1, type – normal – click on dead load – click on >- click over edge load and plinth load-change the default factor as 1.2- click on > - click over live load – change default factor as 1.375- click on > - add.
Then go to analysis and design – run analysis- postprocessing.
