Centrifugal pump design and analysis

Aim - To design a Centrifugal pump and simulate the Flow and obtain Pressure drop, Pressure Ratio and Mass Flow rate.

Objective - To understand the relation between Pressure and MAss Flow rate.

Geometry -

Steps -

1. Select Flow Simulation.

2. For setting up the simulation we need to make our geometry water tight and for that we will use Lids feature and close the inout and output ports.

3. Select internal flow and select Rotation form flow wizard, select WATER as working fluid, and leave the rest default.

4. As our geometry is a SOLID and not an asswembly, we need to apply rotation region so that Solidworks can know that this region is rotating, and for that we have created the secondary Extrude surrounding he impeller.

5. At inlet we need to select the Environmental Pressure and at the Outlet we need to add the Velocity and for that we are doing a Parametric study of how various velocities are affecting the Pressure Ratio and Massflow Rate.

6. We need to control the Calculation Creteria thi is important because if we set it to default, we will not get good results so we are setting the iteration here, and we will be providing a value of 500.

7. After all the above steps are done, we will set the Goals and add the cut plots for velocity, pressure, pressure ratio.

Conclusion -

  1. From the First plot we can see that initially, the velocity is less so the mass flow rate is less when the velocity increases the mass flow rate increases.
  2. From the Second plot, we can see that the pressure ratio is high for low velocity and pressure ratio starts to decrease when the velocity increases.
  3. Velocity plots have proper indication of outflow velocity as assigned. Shown in the plots above.
  4. As from the cutplots of pressure we can see that pressure is not constant inside the impeller, it is varying, near to the centre it is lower and as fulid is going outside, pressure gradually increases.
  5. Also, we can see that velocity defined at the outlet is not constant as well (some flow lines are in different color) meaning that those are having different values as well.
  6. Considering the mass flow rate, it is -ve but it is just fine we just need to take the absolute values of it.
  7. Due to improper/bad design of pup we can see from the flow trajectory that there are some line at the shaft, which are not behaving as the other trails, resulting in flow disturbance, but as it is minor and dosent affect the overall flow pattern,we an neglect it.
